A decision has been made.
We're going to go over to Chester the day before as we like the town and we'll overnight there and then go up to Wallasey and through the tunnel as Liz hasn't been under the Mersey before.
Sorted.
Neither is free. Both free I think so which is the better one for the ferry?
We are overnighting in Chester itself, maybe RoodeeNeither is free.
Fee depends on the size of the vehicle. https://www.merseytunnels.co.uk/
The better (thank you for not using "best") is the Kingsway Tunnel, but it will depend on where you are planning on overnighting.
Since you are coming from Chester you should check out the "Cottage Loaf", Large flat car park use the end away from the pub and reasonable grub. About 30 mins to the terminal.

Crosby Marina (grandiose name for a very small artificial lake for dinghys) has a free car park and is only a couple of miles from the terminal.

There is a pub near by (200 yards), nothing special but I've used it in the past.

We did this in 2018. Arrived at 9pm and had a quiet night. No rush for the ferry in the morning, although it was delayed for 2 hours as they were welding the ramp.I’d suggest checking with P&O but the terminal USED TO BE OPEN 24/7 and you could just park outside and use the facilities.
It’s been 3-4 years since I last used this route so again call and check
6 pm is still the magic time, but not free after 6 pm these days.Magic time is 6pm for free overnight.
We won't be going to Roodee.6 pm is still the magic time, but not free after 6 pm these days.
