using TV on 12 v

Hi folks
Probably a silly question but what do I need to use my normal 15inch tv in the van on 12v when im wilding? We dont usually bother with one in the summer but now the darker nights are drawing in we want to take it with us but have only ever used it when on hook up.
I have got both a camos dome and a simple push up aerial, My TV is a standard 15 inch flat screen from my bedroom at home.
Do I just use one of those 12v leads to power it into the 12v socket? or do I need something more specialised?
last time i tried to use the camos system I used one of the multi way 12v adapters from Halfords to plug in the tv and the receiver but It must have overloaded as it blew the receiver box. :scared: probably better just using the normal aerial?
I only have one 12v socket in the living area of the van and one on the dash which only works when engine is on.
Thanks
Lotty

i use a inverter connected to a car batt. used more power than a dedicated 12v tv, so want one fo them next year

Ther has been a number of threads on this subject ,does the tv come with a mains adapter brick,if it does then what is the output on the brick if it is twelve volts then it should run off 12 volt lesuire battery, but as for using multi 12 volt adapter plug the wire might not be up to amperage required realy need to wire up 12 volt socket/cig socket / with a flex/wire capapble of handling the amperage direct to lesuire battery with inline fuse/
sorry about grammar odr spelling mistake etc

this is some idea of what i on about

i've got2 from comet, both run ok from a 12v socket direct from battery, one with cd player is 60watt one without is 40w so i only use that one, they use more power than you would think

You will probably find that the input is actually 12v. However there is a theory that the normal vehicle 12v supply is not stable enough to run flat screen TV's without affecting the life if the screen itself. This can be rectified by inserting a 12v stabiliser into the supply circuit. They are easy to fit and not expensive, (compared to flat screen tv's) I think they cost around £30.

I got mine by post from Amperor. try amperorassociates.co.uk or search Amperor UK

I recently tested a spare telly I had lying about, in fact the reason it wasn't in use was because it was faulty, the picture and sound were going blank. It had a brick on the power cord so had a look and it was 12v.

I chopped off the cord at the brick, revealing 2 wires within the cable flex, one red and one black, then attached a 10 amp fuse to the red and wired it live then earthed the black. I tested the tv with the engine off and with the engine on, it works brilliant and free of any faults. I made sure the tv had no power going through it while cranking the engine, I think these tv's are designed for a stable voltage and didn't wanna risk breaking something i just fixed!!!

The tv is a 20 inch goodmans LD2002. (unfortunately too big for my van :( )

Got my 15 inch lcd tv from Comet about 4 yrs ago. It was recommended on one of the forums as being low on power usage. Being the sceptic that I am I then rigged up the tv in the garage at home, using a spare 12 v battery and an ammeter.
With tv on only, it was showing 1.7 amps. With tv & dvd playing it registered 2.1 amps.
I use the tv direct off the vans 12 v system, even on the rare occassions that I'm on hook up. And no probs after 4 yrs.
I also use a 12 v pace receiver, or sometimes the Lidl sat receiver, both staright off the vans 12 v system.
regards
Allen

HI, thanks for that.
ive checked the mains adapter brick and it does say 12v output so if ive understood you right, i just need to get a 12v fused lead, (like the one on your ebay link) to plug it into the 12v socket in the van?

I have got a general use one, its not specific for a tv but it has the jack plug end which will plug into the "DC 12v Power" socket on the tv and a cigarette 12v fused socket style end on the other?
I'll give it a try, thanks
Lotty

we had a flat screen in the van when we bought it. it was made for household use and we found it was power hungry and unstable, if we used the pump or put alight on the picture dropped out. we changed it this year for one designed for use with twelve volts and increased our leisure batteries. hope this helps.

new to the forum

i just got a lcd hd tv of ebay for my van, its 15 inch AVTEX W150t, i got it for 90 pound, i went and bought a 500 watt inverter to hook up to the leisure battery for 60 pound, and everything works well.
not sure how long it will last but we will see this weekend. the tv is rated at 30w

30w is a lot. the 12v tv's i have seen, have a max of around 15w. the inverter uses a fair whack to convert it, as you can imagine.

hi cooljules thanks for the reply, how long do you think it will last running an inverter too? on a 85 amp Leisure Battery, for the 30w tv? ive got a split charge relay so it charges both up so hopefully when i get to were im going it will be charged full.

Hi.
im not sure at all how long it would last, some others on here would know much more than me.

i use my tv (45w) and a digibox to watch the F1 if im away. the battery is a standard car one, thats pretty old anyway, i got 4 hours, which was enough for that.

i want next year to get a couple of leisure batteries and a solar panel or 2. but thats a long way off.

Know nothing about these things. The TV I am looking to buy is 12 volt 2.3 amp. 28 watt. Is this good? Will I need a voltage stabiliser or such with this and what arial?

um not sure. seems a nice low amperage. which is the main thing. i havent had my hands on a 12v tv so dont know the ratings etc. dont forget its not the volts that kills you, its the amps.

cant help on arials, would like to know myself

I could well be wrong, but i believe the 12v tvs don' like fluctuating power, ie when you have the engine running and the alternator is trying to charge the batteries so your out put of the LBs would be about 14volts, or you're plugged upto EHU, which again would up the output although some ehu chargers have restricted outputs, ie zigs are about 13.volts(I think).

my current tv input is 12-24volts, although may be getting rid of it soon to get a bigger one only 10inch screen, picture is fine for a small van but but any writing and no chance my eyes are getting worse.

I haven't had a stabilizer on any of my tvs and any past vans, they been fine, just not switched on whilst van engine running, if wrong I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct.

probably safer to have one though.
