I will reluctantly reply to that common criminal AJS ( I go away for the weekend and look at the trouble he gets into)

AJ, what you could once do all night, now takes you all night to do. And only once a year. Give my regards to your wife. Lovely woman, she never lets me leave without a good breakfast inside me (typical golf widow). :D

:)

jeeeeesssuswept... she gave you breakfast....:eek::eek::eek::eek:

you've probably got hours to live...

regards :D
aj

i won't let her in the kitchen let alone anywhere near the cooker

TV on Dark Nights

We bought an August 10.5" screen tv from the Digital Daffodil website which has both digital and analogue tuners as we tour mostly in Scotland where the analogue is on for another couple of years yet. We have been surprised to get watchable pictures in most areas. The tv uses a lot less power than our old Roadstar 10". Usually we can watch a couple of hours a night without draining the battery as long as we charge up it every few days. We also have our old trusty radio on most nights. No TV or radio signal get out the book or cards!

.... how old are you 2... nineteen ...

the older i get the longer it takes:(... up to 3 hours now :p

fit ... like a laimgate whippet me..;)

regards

43 me! pretenting to be 19. The fact that Mrs D's rear puts Kylie to shame does help! OMG if she sees this post it'll be off limits for a month!

Well i am hoping to do less tv,and instead periodically rip **** loads of films of the tinternet and my beloved sci-fi episodes or series.I suppose we should stash to external hard drives before things get serious and we are unable to do these naughty things anymore!

me if I did that kind of thing ;) I would burn them to DVD. I've been told that you can get about 7 divx films on a a dvd and about 14 episodes of say Stargate on a a DVD :D

I used to keep em on harddrive but I kinda got carried away and soon filled the drives :D :D I found that dvds were the way to go for me. Yes they do scratch but 1 scratched DVD is easier to replace than a 500 gig hardrives worth. I'm an IT manager, at work we have mirror drives etc but at home having 2 hardrives that constantly need to be mirroed is just hard work (IMHO). We have a 100gig hardrive that we carry in the van with a few kids films and musiic.

Getting back to the thread I have bough a cheap second hand Laptop today with an A/V to USB converter that I can feed the sattalite into, the laptop will play dvd's or from the hardrive and if the sat feeds into it I will ditch the TV alltogether. If I get a USB DVB tuner the lappy will do everything and its only cost me £137 on fleebay so I'm not going to be paranoid about it being stolen or getting broken. Seemed to be a good way to go.

Feel free to ask, if I don't know I'm sure one of my team will have the answer, I know lots of nerds in dark rooms surrounded by empty coke cans. Oh that's me :D

To pick up on the comments about not having TV in a motorhome, TBH I have always managed to balance PC's / TV / Games and real life pretty well. We camp / MH alot and love walking and the outdoor life and have done so for years but I still enjoy spending many hours on my pc's and watching films and SiFI, to ignore TV and the Internet IMHO is to disregard a huge and valuable source of information and its also a lot of fun.

I watched 'GI Joe' last night what a cracking fun film, On sunday we watched life, what a cracking interesting and informative program. The diversity of programs that are available to us now is truly amazing.

Got to agree with you there. We are off to Flamborough today for 4 days or so. We will walk (Well Mrs D will, Im a bit crippled at the mo), bike about a bit both Mountain bike and scooter, go see some fire works, possibly Dave S***** at Bridlington Spa, eat fish and chips, go to the pub, park the van at the cliff tops and read the papers, TALK TO EACH OTHER!!!! etc etc but we are in a field on our own probably, it gets dark at 5 oclock. I like a good book but there is a limit. TV is invaluable sometimes, maybe not on a warm summer night in fact definatly not but in the winter? Internet is crucial. Keeps me in touch with work and allows me to make a few quid from the van (otherwise I couldnt have spent 124 nights away in the van this year so far). If your out and about exploring having the internet in the van is like having your own local tour guide and CL / Wildcamping spot finder. Mind you I dont think I would ever get through 270 episodes of Prisoner Cell Block H. (Worrying that one!)

Cheers

Yes indeed :)

What do you do in the way of consultancy?

I'm employed to run a service desk now but I alsoend up coding and started my life in IT on the road as an 'Installation' engineer. At the moment I'm writing code for a SQL based asset management system for my company. I'd love to go into consultantcy but just can't seem to see a way to make the break

Project work generally for companies like Business Link, One North East etc but nothing doing at the moment, the other stuff is remote support for customers. I do a lot of hands on networking and PC / Mac stuff in the Print and Design industry for two of the main high street Print on Demand franchises. Prefer the consultancy stuff though as its fantastic money, can go away in the van and work in the morning and do what I like in the afternoon. Its all gone mega quiet this year though so much so that we took three months off to tour Europe this summer. Great trip of a life time but didnt earn much money!

Thats my worry break away from the teat and find I don't have enough working coming in. I've had enough of the constant pressure of never ending projects and change in the company I work for. They are part of a multi national and seem to have a whole ethos commited to change for the sake of change, its driving me mad to be honest. Next spring regardless I'm going to make the break and take some serious time off then who knows :)

To be honest thats why we took so much time off this year, the regular work dropped off severely towards the back end of 2008 so 2009 has been "our year" if you like. Probably the sensible thing would have been to fight for more business but after 20 years in IT I saw it as an opportunity to live the dream a bit. If I had my way I would rent the house out and go off for a couple of years but I cant (so far) persude Mrs D to do this. With commisions and rent we would have enough money to go off in the van full time and not dig into capital, except for emergencies. If your looking for a change I went self employed 8 years ago having worked for a large international printing franchise as Senior IT manager. Best thing I ever did! Not sure now is a good climate to do it but it depends where your skills are and if they are in demand I suppose. £1500 per day is not impossible and a few years ago quite common. Right now. No chance!
