Travel Apps

One no one ever mentions is pocketgpsworld.com it had POIs for just about anything you can think of for almost anywhere in the world, it also includes speed camera alerts kept up to date by members, it has a forum and you can download POIS to you devices too, I'm a life member and use the downloads extensively.

I don't think it's censored.

Make sure to use the mobile site, not the desktop one.

You need basic French, or a translation thingy. But that should take you to this screen, where you use 'recherche' to search.

Then enter the town you want to visit, for example, Calais.

That then takes you to a list of places with Calais in the name, select the one you want.

That brings up a list of aires, sites, parking etc. There is akey that shows what's free, what's charged but when you choose the one you want, this is where it gets really useful.

Select the 'visite virtuelle' and you get a 360⁰ sweep of the aire so you can see if it's a good fit for you - in terms of size and quality. For example, is it a pretty, rural, attractive place, or a pot-holed carpark on a run down industrial estate.

It translates to English & shows an option to download an app but it doesn't go anywhere.

I saved the URL to my Android phone bookmarks and it opens in French then translates to English, I can't see how to get map view up like on the PC though.

Ah, yes it translates if I open it in Chrome.

For the map, I get that shown if I swap from the mobile site to the desktop site.

Yes I get it on the PC, but I have no idea which region or department etc I'm in but I can easily find my location on a map as I have other means to see it.

I've sent a message to ask if it is possible.

Hi Kev,

When I visit the website using my laptop, I see no option to download an app.
When I visit the website using my smartphone, I am served an advert inviting me to download an app that is not in any way associated with the website.
I see nothing whatsoever to indicate that the website has an associated app.

In my second screenshot, there's 'autour de moi' which is 'around me' (my location).

And, I didn't bother screenshotting it, but after entering a town (Calais in my example) you get a list of stopping places, at the top there's a Légende, legend. Payante is payable, gratuite is free.

Maybe I assume too much but this looks like a app link to me Tom.

No mention of "appli" or "application". No Play Store or App Store icon.

No trace of any such app when searching Play Store (on laptop, in order to do a full search rather than one that will yield only results available for installation on the Android device used for the search).

It's certainly a handy website to have, an actual phone app would be even better.

This suggests that there is one.

If I open the original link I get this but no actual phone app, it does translate though.

It's the one I gave earlier - not sure why it works differently but on my old tablet, it gives the mobile site but on my new one, I also need to change it from desktop to mobile. I generally use it on my phone though. I wonder if the app is developed, was possibly released then withdrawn because they found a bug?
