Towbars.

Hello all...
I have a Ci carioca 694 and as i like a little project i was going to fabricate a towbar to fit.. Now I've done some measurements and have a plan in mind ( and the steel in the garage ).. but i'd like to see if somebody out there has the same van and wouldn't mind posting an image of how their towbar is designed. Bit of a long shot but lets see... TIA. Ian

If your van is post 29th October 2012 it may require a type approved towbar.

I take it this would be notifiable to an insurance co,at least with a type approved you have someone to sue if it were to suffer a catastrophic failure

Quite sure my welding will hold up to any scrutiny thanks.

I am quite sure it will but Type Approval does involve a trifle more, and a non type approved towbar will result in an MOT fail

Your van will be ok with home made t/bar because of age,i made this and as the mot ask me to fit a lower bumper i went a bit futher.

If removed for MOT?. Not that I'm advocating such
dastardly deeds.

Or if he just removed ball, wouldn’t that make it just a chassis strengthener.

Probably, and would certainly be true if was one a of a number of
Autotrails models, it would definitely qualify as a floor strengthener,
somewhere to pop rivet the handy angle to!

Why I suggested removal of tow bar:
I suppose a really zealous Tester could strictly apply (unfavourably) the Rules
where it states that the bracketing of where a removed tow ball
has been fitted, should be inspected, or words to that effect. I
don't recall verbatim.

They won't fail a towbar just because it doesn't have a type approval sticker on, (they actually wear and sometimes even come off), the reasons for failing any towbar are explained in the MOT testers manual. As it has been pointed out type approval is for vehicles registered after 2012 although I'm sure when I posted on here about having a towbar made someone said there is some British Standards regulations that apply to vehicles before that but I can't find the post right now and my 1996 Dethleffs was registered even before that came into force!

Regards,
Del

British standards only apply if made by a co,home build like t/bars & trailers dont count.

With a home made tow bar you apply the
the VHB Standard. That is you ask the Very Heaviest
Bloke or (Woman Bloke) you can find, to jump and
down on it.

might be worth clarifying that "vehicles" = Motor Caravans if referring to type approval requirement from 2012.
If talking Cars, it is 1999; and if talking Commercials, there is no type approval needed currently.

Different make MH (2009) but I needed a towbar as we need to pull a box trailer to motocross meetings. My Fiat chassis stopped well short of the rear of the vehicle. I had to get it custom made - chassis extenders and a full length rear bar which the tow ball bolts on to. The company attached a metal plate with date, reg no, towing capacity, and some other code nos. Real professional job. Wouldn't have even considered doing it my self - visions of the box trailer going in a different direction down the motorway. The rails obviously provide extra support for the floor but presume that wasn't really needed as the MH company would have done this when it was built otherwise. I had it MOTd a few weeks ago with no advisories. Bob
