Tourist Tax?

They said on the news last night petrol and deisel is on the way up as middle east is cutting production ,that's a surprise innit ,

Looking on the bright side (she said, opportunistically!), could mean a few more second hand camper vans that will suit me and him may find their way back on the market in a wee while... one man's loss, etc. etc. ...;)🤞🏴‍☠️

You sure you’re not a politician Wullie, I mean a toilet flushing tax, only a politician would think if that one. Would that mean we would be on camera whilst on the throne, for tax reasons, or would the they assume we flushed the loo x amount of times a day. And from what I witnessed at your soirée doon the borders, you and Rob would be heavily subsidised by the rest of us. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
We here in North Cornwall still have a hosepipe ban as a result of the summers drought and the tourists using all our water so a charge per toilet flush does not seem such a bad idea. We should have a charge like the everglades one on the roads into Cornwall, Registered locals exempt, of course.

Yes and we STILL have a hose ban here in North Cornwall. Even though our water does not come from the most seriously affected reservoir.

This was discussed recently on other social media. In SE Cornwall, our local reservoirs are choc-a-bloc but we still have a hosepipe ban. Plymouth takes its supplies from the same reservoirs as SE Cornwall yet they don't have a hosepipe ban while we do, which seems perverse and unfair
.
SWW have three strategic reservoirs, Colliford, Roadford and Wimbleball they can use to directly supply some regions and to feed into the rivers and local reservoirs. Of the three strategic reservoirs, Colliford and Roadford (on Bodmin Moor) remain low while Wimbleball (SE Exmoor) is currently full (as are the Stithians and Burrator local reservoirs). Ultimately, it seems that North Cornwall's water is mainly from river extraction and reserves come from the two worst affected reservoirs (Colliford & Roadford).

It is very unfair, especially on us in Bodmin as our water comes from the Delank River, not from any of the reservoirs which is why at the end of summer our water smells and tastes of ponds and still we have a ban. Where in SE Cornwall are you from GeoffL?

Thanks Marie, not that it changes anything. A neighbour was washing his car with his hose the other day, I think I might do similar. My wagon is filthy. I can wash it as I bought a pressure washer that works from a bucket but it is a right faff to use and the roof is just not worth it. As I spent three days in hospital last year with broken ribs, falling off the roof of the wagon. I will claim it is for safety reasons, if challenged.

Looking at the map, I suspect that your strategic reservoir is Colliford Lake. SWW use rivers, leats, etc. as natural aqueducts and some quick research shows there is existing infrastructure between Colliford and the De Lank waterway (see linked document, p3; p6).

FWIW, I'm just across the Hamoaze from Plymouth. Our water comes from abstraction from the Lynher and/or Tamar. According to a SW Lakes guy I saw at Colliford a couple of months ago, the Rame Peninsula isn't fed from Colliford (he thought reserves were pumped from Burrator to the rivers we get our water from, and it appears that Roadford is the strategic reserve that keeps Burrator topped up).

BTW, regarding the van roof -- I've found "Wet & Forget" works well. Choose a dry day and spray onto the roof and let it dry. Every time it rains for a while after that moss or algae that's built up on the roof is washed away. It keeps a very clean roof almost pristine and a few days of heavy rain will strip the algae etc. off one that hasn't been cleaned in while.

I think that the politically emotive word tax is some of the problem here. It wakes up people who rush to defend the dykes that hold back perceived threats to our freedom 😀

Maybe we need to take a lesson from the 80s when the hugely resented Poll "tax" was replaced by the now fully accepted Community "charge"? 😄
Must be different where you live but here it’s still called Council Tax https://www.hull.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-account/ways-pay-your-council-tax

Benchman Ladders bought last week to avoid learning about gravity the hard way ... And in Fife. the rains coming down quicker than I can use it, so if you're coming to the Lochore gathering ... Think of it as the Relief of Mafeking, and Mafeking drains need enlarged ... :D

They have charged 20 pence for a good few years now Wully I am expecting that to go up soon. Must start buying the heavy duty Tena Ladies in case I take short as I dont carry money only because I spend it as soon as I get it.

Thanks Geoff, Dry day? what is one of those. I have been waiting to mow my lawn for weeks now and though not raining today it was wet last night and the roof and lawn are still wet. I have some wet and forget and also others similar but cheaper and must do that just as soon as I am able.

One of my best friends is an ex SWW engineer and though having been retired for some time so is probably out of touch he says that both his and my supplies come direct from the De Lank river (thanks for correcting my spelling) but the publication in your link is obviously more up to date. I'll put him right when next I see him.

Thanks again, Harry

Sorry Marie I don't believe in fairy's , not sure about farther Christmas either,

You're right, Baz, there's a genuine shortage of half-decent second hand vans below a certain price.

It's still a seller's market, unfortunately (for us). Nowt you can do about it really 🤷‍♀️

There are plenty of vans coming up with messages like "started the project but change of circumstances, don't have the time any more..." "we're upsizing..." "we're downsizing... ". Also plenty of unspoken "we're just trying to make a killing while the going is good, no matter what old heap it is we're trying to get rid of". I'd rather do without than be totally ripped off, thank you very much.

Just missed out on a genuinely good Nuevo we'd have been more than happy with last week, but pipped at the post by someone who was quicker off the mark than we were. Also just missed out on a Mirage. I think someone on here was selling there Mirage 2 or 3 years back, but we still had our other van at the time, otherwise would have been a good buy.

What kind of M/Home/Van are you looking at, Marie [and price range]? My friend Kostos has a Burstner PVC and also has a VW [California?]. He said 2 days ago that he really needs to be sensible and sell the VW. It might be good for both of you! If you want to PM me, I can speak to Kostos tomorrow to get more details for you

You only need the weather to stay dry long enough for the Wet & Forget solution to dry. Wet & Forget isn't cheap (£35 for 5 litres), but I still have half the five litres I bought in 2019 and use it every six months or so on both my concrete paths and the roof of the van.

TBH, I suspect your friend is correct and you do get your water direct from the De Lank river. However, it seems that the river is maintained from Colliford Lake (and now possibly also Hawks Tor pit) during times of 'drought'.
