Found the packet I knew I had it somewhere, look at the size of the cigs then.

Just watching the news and the report from Bowness is regarding a £1 tourist tax (per person per night). Apparently this is being looked at all over the country.
How on earth do they expect to collect that unless they expect the police to go round the local carparks looking for MHs and charging them depending on occupancy.

It will be charged to hoteliers, probably campsites etc who will be expected to pass it on to their customers.

They had this in Canada last time I was there 3% was added to Hotel room and any purchases made like in restaurants and attractions especially round the Niagara Falls area but you could refuse to pay it and they had to take it off your bill. Waiting on the Tyre tax here next seems like every day they are thinking of more ways to tax us or find ways to charge us for every day things. What’s next 20p every time you flush a toilet.
They have charged 20 pence for a good few years now Wully I am expecting that to go up soon. Must start buying the heavy duty Tena Ladies in case I take short as I dont carry money only because I spend it as soon as I get it.

So, if this happens as well as toll roads and LEZ charges there will be another price to pay, presumably with a fine if you don't pay on time?
Just what your average Brit who can barely afford a holiday due to the cost of living crisis needs at the moment!

Oh well, here's a little song just to cheer everybody up;

In Bradford they have introduced a Caz zone for HGV. Motorhomes fall foul of this with the likes of mine been £50 so a weekend away is £100. You could go miles around it up & down hills through built up housing to save the environment. I did get an exception been a resident so the air is clean? As for predicting a riot I went on the second protest being the centre to a standstill. I predict cars next then the no pay like Birmingham

I have recently been sorting a trip to Germany for this September and one place is charging €2.80 per person, per night as a tourist tax. That's the best part of €40 extra for a week's stay for a couple!

I am not against the principle per se but at those rates it will deter visitors I think,

Check when you get there, some tourist areas in Germany give you free public transport in the region including rail for the price of your tax. Great system.

Infinitely better value and chicken feed when compared to the latter/day hikes in parking charges for motorhomes (where it’s even allowed in UK “tourist hotspots” that is!) of £10 and even more - just for parking overnight on a bit of tarmac! - or the £40-50 + per night fees now charged by the CMC etc. We still don’t have a decent network of aires and nimbyism is very much alive and kicking.

If I could afford a trip to Germany in the first place I doubt very much whether a comparatively small sum of £20 per person tourist tax on top per week would deter me, but that’s just my own thoughts 🤷‍♀️ 🤔

Even more reason to head over the Channel 🙂
Taxe de sejours for formal sites? Agree that the free Aires are different [for motorhomes]; Tourist Tax is a growing feature, especially in the very popular/invaded cruise ports, such as Barcelona, Venice, Santorini etc

You might if the campsite was asking €49 for a night as well!

You're right, I would! :ROFLMAO:

But I would be extremely reluctant to pay €‎49 for a night on a campsite in the first place and would be seeking out all the alternatives, so it's kind of a hypothetical question where I'm concerned ... 🤷‍♀️ ;) :)

Taxes abound on all sorts of goods and services and in all sorts of (often hidden) ways.

Those who earn, or have earned, enough money in their lives to be genuinely comfortably off won't really be affected by the sorts of tourist taxes you're talking about. Yes, it may affect tourism numbers, but lots of other things are influencing the state of play here.

And there may be sensible and reasonable requirements for the introduction of certain taxes, or there might not, but no matter which way you look at it taxes are 100% "political" and will always raise arguments and outrage for and against them until the cows come home. 🤷‍♀️

PS. Reference that old chestnut quote which reminds us about the absolute certainty of "death and taxes" and our inability to avoid either! - with the possible exception of shell companies and hidden offshore accounts... but those b*ggers will still die eventually, same as the rest of us mere mortals, as no one has yet discovered the secret of eternal life! :devilish: :ROFLMAO: ;)

I think that the politically emotive word tax is some of the problem here. It wakes up people who rush to defend the dykes that hold back perceived threats to our freedom 😀

Maybe we need to take a lesson from the 80s when the hugely resented Poll "tax" was replaced by the now fully accepted Community "charge"? 😄

You're right, but I'm not sure what lesson you're talking about. I never agreed with the Poll tax and still don't, but we all have to pay it regardless of our opinions. 🤷‍♀️

If the government of the day, or other local public authorities, want to introduce a tax it inevitably means "put up and shut up", and traditionally so here in the UK.

But then, as I said earlier, we definitely ain't French, are we?! ;) 😂

They said on the news last night petrol and deisel is on the way up as middle east is cutting production ,that's a surprise innit ,
