To change or not to change

With lockdown hopefully ending in the next 6 months? we may get back to some sort of normality. It has allowed is me and Denise to think over what we want in a motorhome. Our current one a 2016 Adria 590ST is to be fair well built, a quality bit of kit other than the odd little thing we sorted and of course the soon to be sorted water tank. But in looking to the future we wonder, is it right for just us two long term? We started to look around and with its value being so good we could sell it and make the same we bought it for. Ive been looking at the new Burstner 4x4 campervan. I know "why 4x4" but im a weirdo who motorhomes in winter and not in summer and my 4x4 car has really blown me away as to what grip you can have.. I go to places to photograph wildlife and landscapes and would like something with all the gear but as small as possible. Also given that we appear to be as popular as a fart in a spacesuit something low key, easily hidden when wilding. When I retire, and given what works like i wish it was tomorrow, we will tour, we will go round scandanavia, we will go to Italy. But there in is the problem. Even at 6 mtres the Adria has all the kit. It is comfortable, spacious due to design, everything works and you could tour/live in it for long stretches. Im really confused and aware theres no perfect. But you guys are experts on all things motorhome. So is there a campervan that is well built that you could recommend? Van or motorhome?? Those who have had both which do you prefer? Just so we can look and decide. Its a huge decision as it will be our last one. Keep what we know or risk a van. My heed hurts!

4x4 sounds like a good idea for what you need, especially when you look at the weather we've had recently!

You could buy a 4x4 van and convert it yourself. That way you can have whatever layout and set up you want.

Yeah, 4x4 panel van base, both transit and now galvanised sprinter do 4x4 options. Some of the jdm two ton truck based campers that have been imported are 4wd and haven’t seen salt.

Is the Burstner 4x4 just on panel van? Looks pretty much identical layout to the Hymer Grand Canyon S

Think any MWB panel van conversion will seem smaller on inside space to the Adria, that bit of extra width make a lot of difference.

Any Burstner 4x4 in UK? Had a quick look but didn't come across any.

Jdm= Japan domestic market. Have a look at japanmarketdirect.com or many others. There are dealers with stock in uk, have a search for imported Japanese campers.

Have you considered a demountable? Can also be used as your everyday drive and get rid of the car;

We parked next to a Hymer 4x4 last summer. It looked like a normal medium size coach built but on a Mercedes 4x4 base.
Might be worth a look, but I would imagine they are going to be pretty pricey.

Maybe back to pros and cons of current van...4x4 sounds great for your needs. What else is making you think of a change....I would be reluctant if that was the only reason and was planning long trips away.
Such a personal decision. We went for the smallest we felt we could live in for a couple of months at a time, stealth looks so we could park discreetly, space to sit and a fixed bed. Very happy with what we had done.

I saw this at a car show. It covers the 4x4 brief well, but certainly compromises on interior space. Those who I know who have moved from a coachbuilt to a panel van have found the interior space, particularly width to be a problem after what they’ve been used to.

As you've probably noticed the price tag that goes with a Sprinter if 4x4 is a bit eye watering. Understandably putting your budget on a forum isn't that comfortable but with wanting a 4x4 it would be useful

Fancy making me green with envy and looks very suitable, although the bed set up looks a bit clunky

My wife was parked on a reservoir carpark recently, post walk no traction with 2wd to get off carpark, engaged 4wd and moved along with no problem, saved a lot of faff

As you've probably noticed the price tag that goes with a Sprinter if 4x4 is a bit eye watering. Understandably putting your budget on a forum isn't that comfortable but with wanting a 4x4 it would be useful
