Hi all. Had this problem on and off for a while. It started about 4 year ago on the way back from Plymouth to Sheffield ,gear stick rattling like mad and actually making the van shake while going over over about 45mph. We pulled in and called rac. I thought an engine mount must have gone but he checked them and they looked fine. He followed us up the motorway for a junction and it was fine and then the other 140 mile home it was fine, strangely.
I decided to change the engine mounts anyway has they where the originals and pushing 30 year old and all seemed well for about 2 years.
Then last year had a very similar occurrence on the way to and from Ipswich. I had my mechanic check the engine mounts and they all looked ok so spoke to coastal motorhomes and they suggested changing some rubber bushes on the lower front arms which seemed to cure it but then it was back last weekend traveling to Swansea and back. Slightly different now, starts at about 42mph till about 55mph then is fine, but when you hit an hill on the motorway and the old girl starts towing a bit it'll start again really severe.
Someones suggested a worn drive shaft but I'd have thought it would shake at any speed if it was that?
It's nothing to do with tyres or balancing as when I knock it into neutral it stops straight away.
Anybody had similar or any idea what could be causing it? Could it be the lower engine mount again as I know they're prone to wear?
