Hi all. Had this problem on and off for a while. It started about 4 year ago on the way back from Plymouth to Sheffield ,gear stick rattling like mad and actually making the van shake while going over over about 45mph. We pulled in and called rac. I thought an engine mount must have gone but he checked them and they looked fine. He followed us up the motorway for a junction and it was fine and then the other 140 mile home it was fine, strangely.
I decided to change the engine mounts anyway has they where the originals and pushing 30 year old and all seemed well for about 2 years.
Then last year had a very similar occurrence on the way to and from Ipswich. I had my mechanic check the engine mounts and they all looked ok so spoke to coastal motorhomes and they suggested changing some rubber bushes on the lower front arms which seemed to cure it but then it was back last weekend traveling to Swansea and back. Slightly different now, starts at about 42mph till about 55mph then is fine, but when you hit an hill on the motorway and the old girl starts towing a bit it'll start again really severe.
Someones suggested a worn drive shaft but I'd have thought it would shake at any speed if it was that?
It's nothing to do with tyres or balancing as when I knock it into neutral it stops straight away.
Anybody had similar or any idea what could be causing it? Could it be the lower engine mount again as I know they're prone to wear?

Many cars did this in my day, esp the first rear wheel drive sodas, cure was a rubber washer on the stick joint to shift rod between the seats.
If you have a direct shift stick it could well be the nylon swivel bush on the g box is worn or cracked, common fault with old ford escorts.
If its a dash rod sys there may be wear in the links to box, thes problems take time to find and much head scratching, been ther had the T shirt.

Gear box is on the left hand side and it's got some strange linkage system across to the gear stick which is floor mounted and slightly to the right of the van. It's french so strange. And I know that they do have trouble with the linkage system wearing but gear stick shaking about isn't a symptom, it's usually the gears are miles away from each other and in 1st 3rd 5th the gear sticks hitting the dash.

Could it be the bottom front bolts on linkage box are loose and then that would be why the dash is so close to dashboard ? Put some bigger washers on it.

Linkage then worn, this happens at certain revs and speed, called resident spot, ships are designed to un outside the range of residency or they would fall apart, any wear makes it worse.

This bloke knows what he's on about but it's over my head and it doesn't mention rattling gearstick

My gearstick is in the right position I think. It's not near the dash

Ouch

Yes I know, but it doesn't suggest a shaking gearstick as a worn linkage problem.
I sent the bloke who wrote that a message and he says its very unlikely to be anything to do with gearbox, linkage or gearstick and more than likely something on the drive shafts. My mechanic is going to take them off next week and see what the crack is. Hopefully he gets it sorted

If its f wheel drive you would feel it in the steering wheel and if bent a slight weave at walking pace, if it was a g box problem or bearings within you would hear a whuring sound.

Have you gone south yet ? As if your trip was north of Sheffield its not the same problem / issue. As it seems to happen only down south. Lol

I think the word is resonance...When a vibration input is the same frequency as the system's natural frequency - it even happens to bridges

I had a similar experience and it was a injector failing causing the engine to misfire and car shaked as though it was falling apart it was difficult to detect the misfire as shake was so severe and only occasional
