I'm envisioning the tyre spinning around inside them if not? Maybe not?

You're right......think if I have enough grip pieces so the tyre is always pressing at least one into the ground that will work. Proprietary snow chains must work on that principle as they're just fastened with a d ring

Maybe! I'm just thinking that you wont bother fitting the devices until you're actually stuck and by that time the tyres will have a nice coating of mud and will have poor grip against the tyre unless pulled tight, I can envisage snow chains (in snow) gripping the tyre quite well but I could easily be wrong.
