They are £1.80 now though! I can remember a few years ago pre pandemic they were about 90p.

Used to be a butcher in Buxton did their own pork pies. Come Christmas time they were pre order only and the queues to pick them up were longer than any other shops in Buxton. Sadles (Wardles as it was) closed many years ago now. There is still a butcher on the market place that make their own pies and they are some of the best I have tasted.

the site next to the sailing club is basic but good almost on the circular walk around the lake as well as lyndon top there is a campsite opposite the horse & jockey in manton was/is a ccc cl but also you can go in the pub and book in as a non member , i live 4 miles from the water within 20 miles there is certainly plenty to occupy you the short walk around is just over 19 miles oakham is only a couple of miles as andy says the castle worth a trip & there is a tesco lidl & aldi and a very good indian ( 10 Dining st ) melton mowbray itself is 14 mls away tueasday is market day with a cattle market and stalls in there plus a normal market through the streets , there is also a good garden centre near lyndon top and a huge one called gate’s about 10 mls away with all the franchised outlets and as rob & merl say the pork pies from clarkes at queniborough are great i’ll be getting 30 or 40 to take to the meet at the jimmies

Brilliant local advice thanks. Looks like it will be an ideal stopover for a few days with plenty to do although a short walk to me is 19 yards not 19 miles.

For the two sites, Lyndon top and the other one do you usually just turn up or book?

If you would drive a distance to try a hot port pie, just buy a cold one in Morrisons, stick it on your exhaust manifold and drive a distance. Then it will be hot. I know that was a standard practice in the GPO, wrap one in foil and cook it on the exhaust.

Back to the topic. There's a Harley Davidson dealer in Oakham. Go in there for a laugh at the prices, and admire the chrome, and wonder how on earth you would guide one of those along the King's Highway. And wonder if you can afford the cost of the polish you would use every week.

the legend surrounding the melton mowbray pork pies is that they were served hot to the gentry whilst out hunting then of course any unused ones were eaten by the retainers cold & prefered at what point someone thought to add jelly i’ve no idea but whoever it was thank you , the queniborough butcher as well as the traditional pie also does a version with caramelised onion relish instead of jelly and has melted stilton for a topping

Just planning stage two of our epic adventure which is of course heading over to France in mid to late June. Im thinking of not rushing down to Dover and maybe having a couple of nights at Rutland Water. Im sure its been mentioned before on here. Is there enough to do there to keep us occupied for a couple of nights or maybe three. Of course we will have the scooter with us and the Kayak so I imagine so. Anything worth seeing in the local area within 20 miles in any direction?

The two sites of choice seem to be Lyndon Top or Rutland Water campsite next to the sailing club. Both appear to be large Aire type sites. Which one is the best?

I would recommend the boat trip on Rutland water, details from the visitor centre. Also within a few miles is Barnsdale Geoff Hamiltons gardens. each individual one was a small set for his tv gardening show and they serve a decent lunch in the cafe as well

So Lyndon top here we are!! What a cracking place. Its humongous with plenty of fields to choose from. The front field with partial views of the water was a bit busier so we opted for another one with a bit more space. £16 a night including services. Its kind of like a massive Aire. Lovely lady on reception, very helpful and friendly. Seems well organised.

Internet (Vodafone) is crap though. Just about works

Quick break then out for the afternoon on the bike. Its warm. 30c when we arrived but a bit of cloud now.

If you had stayed on the top field (with Lake views), you could have had free wifi from a Hotel a couple of miles away. I always did, with my long range antenna (same one you had years ago).

Well I hope this doesn't offend anyone but I'm not impressed with Rutland water. Lyndon Top is a cracking Aire / site but the lake itself was a disappointment. We rode right right round it but it's almost impossible to get near it and every time you can you just hit a queue of traffic and a anpr barrier without even knowing what it is on the other side. A car park usually.

Then believe it or not it started to rain! The first day of summer that's supposed to be scorchio (it is warm mind) and it's raining!

Went into Oakham for something to eat and came back to the van.

If you had pedal power, getting around the lake at waterline level is a dawdle.

It is a decent place to stop over, my preference is now North Witham ccc site, less distance to travel from the A1M.

Cheers everyone. Pubs are not a big thing for us anyway unless we are out for lunch. I only really like to go to the pub with a group of my friends. If its just me and Michelle we may as well drink in the van.

I think we will definitely try Rutland Water. Seems like there is plenty to do and I might get out on the water sailing (been a while). I was initially just thinking an overnight but I might book in for three days or so.

So a bit more rake around. I was determined to find the lake. And possibly a swimming spot. Worra carry on! The Hambleton peninsula which is the finger bit that sticks out from the direction of Oakham into the lake looked a likely contender on Google maps so we set off to explore that. Got towards the end and its barriered off for the last quarter of a mile. The Rutland fun Police had not considered the Honda Biff Chariot though so determined to actually get down to the lake I squeezed around it. Lovely little spot all to ourselves. Well for a while at least. I even managed a swim.

On the plus side its certainly hot enough to be jumping in lakes and riding about in shorts and flip flops. Good practice for France. Some lovely little hidden villages and properties around there as well.

I think we are done though. Off to Kent tomorrow after Michelle has walked to the church in the lake in the morning you can see in the pictures. Maybe some Oysters in Whitstable and a punch up in Margate.

We passed the town bear to Pont Du Gard earlier today, where the bridge crosses the wide Gard river. I swear, there were hundreds of people taking a cooling off dip. Would have made a good pic, but on the move.
