If you can afford it do it...it's your life, you're an adult follow your heart. Who cares what others think, as long as you are not harming anybody else.

Do what you feel is right for you at the time, if you don't you may regret it.

If it goes well, think,"What a wonderful choice I made for my life" if it's not quite what you wanted think "Well I tried it, it was my choice and I can blame no one"

Like everything that we do, there are choices to take, so many people live their lives with a whole load of "What if''s"

Nothing ventured nothing gained, but remember, the grass can always look greener, it probably isn't a way of not working for a living and you should accept the local customs and way of life, not try to change it.

Yes, it's really bad.
Now get back to work and keep paying tax.:lol-053:

But sp2 boy is right.

Hi

Well given "Most" of us only work because we have to, yes some even enjoy working - but I am sure a high percentage would "retire" and do other things with their time given a choice.

But don't kid yourself that you can move aboard and have a higher standard of living with a lower cost, just ask the many thousands of expats who have done it.

You don't of course elaborate how you will fund this retirement, which is really the only question you need to ask yourself.

But remember the UK is, in my opinion, the best place to live, and those of us who contribute to the Exchequer do pay a hefty price

Just my thoughts

If you really mean retire, as in not work at all, if you're only 30 you'll need to be exceedingly wealthy. If you are exceedingly wealthy then follow your heart.

I was forced to retire young due to ill health, and I have to say, having as much time as you want on your hands is not all it's cut out to be. To waht extent me feeling like that is due to me being restricted in what I can do, I cannot answer.

I know people who've gone abroad to work when young and loved it; Equally I know others for whom it has been the worse thing they ever did, it didn't live up to their romantic notion of it and they've come back here.

Good luck whatever you decide.

im not that wealthy but dont work apart from doing things online so will not be looking for work out there but do have a 4 year old so school might be a prob and the wife is now saying she dont want to leave family :rolleyes2:

If I was in the position to decide retirement, there would be no contest. I would only job about to stay sane........
although if the other half doesn't want to go to spain then it sounds like your decision is made, from the people I know who have moved abroad it only really works if all concerned wants it. but that's only my opinion. good luck.

Feel for you ... I had the same thoughts since I was at primary school, I managed to hold out until I hit 42, now I just please myself and I'm not filthy rich either, but I was told once, that 'a wise man knows when he has enough'
Its surprising just how little you really need, when you have the roof, food and fuel covered ...

are you out there now then dolmen
i might have to wait a few years now as the other half has put her foot down for now so will have to work on her
will start that when winter hit us again and the sun has gone

Once again - lots of good advice from people with experience in the posts above.........

My twopenny worth - if you value your relationship be very very sure that it is a joint decision! In my humble experience, from friends I've seen, family and money can be the major causes for marital break-ups.

Apart from that it sounds a wonderful idea.

Good luck with whatever happens

I always say that I worked 48hrs a day and 8 days a week most of my life :hammer:(felt like it) and made it till I was 50 before saying enough was enough. Personally I can't see the facination Spain has, there are plenty of places to go other than there (imho) That said I'm still here due to family and will be for a while yet.

I hope you find what your looking for whether it be now or later.:goodluck:

The fascination with the Iberian peninsula is that if you pick your region well you can have very mild winters...certainly compared to the UK.

The scenery can be equally as nice there as anywhere over here, the food, well that is down to what you cook, the people are both good and bad as they are here but when it gets cold here and you have to warm the place that you live in and the costs are getting so expensive and they are unlikely to ever be getting any cheaper in the future...as they say, 'the only way is up'!

Dealing with heat is better than dealing with the cold IMHO.

I would drop everything today and move out to Spain but the wife, like yours, doesn't want to move away from her family so its not going to happen for a while. That's not to say it will never happen.

GO FOR IT

The best thing i ever did the only thing is the school bit your child might find hard at first but once they have made friends they will love it, i have friends here with a 9 year old son and his Spanish is really good his mum takes him shopping if she as to ask for some thing, rent very cheap now as long as you stay just inland from the coast, and believe it there is some work here not all as bad as they make out. Good luck if you need any info let me know. ken:wacko:

Some of my family are moving to Spain ( jobs and accomodation already arranged). One of them is very clued-up and he says electricity can be very expensive.
Luckily, he's into the solar panels, so reckons they'll be fine.:)

hi vee dub,
if you have a van and some cash, why not take off. Trundle down through france and tour spain. check out places. we would advise avoiding brit heavy places: benidorm, torrevieja, mojacar etc because it is a BIG country. in other words, try it first. Those beautiful blue skies get monotonous and the summer heat repressive. Habla usted espanol? start now because its good to learn another language and the people will love you for trying.

renting is now cheap . . we have a friend who used to go long term on campsites with his caravan but is now renting an apartment.

the two worst things: 1 not getting what you want. 2 getting what you want.
