hi does anyone know the best paint to repaint our Ldv 400 minibus .it has fibreglass roof .we want to repaint it but cant afford a full respray

you could visit a local farm .tractor place get a few tins of tractor paint . thin it with white spirit then foam roller it on .
not a respray finish but good results can be achieved.
our local mole valley farmers sell teamac paint .very good and easy to use .
try a google teamac.co.uk

paint

try your local college ... see if some local budding artists want a mobile canvas for their 'graffiti' art ...... could look brill

Years ago I painted vintage lorry's and buses the paint I used for many years was called tecaloyed (spelling may not be right ) you can get a great finish with this no brush marks, and a finish you could see to shave with. :drive: :drive:

Tekaloid is a coach paint and goes on even better if you warm the paint in a hot water bath. My late father in law had a garage that specialised in radiator builds and coachwork which included classic and vintage car restorations. He used Tekaloid amongst others some of which are now off the market,he said that it was one of the best and he gave me the tip about warming the paint.
Use new unused brushes as well,if you have the time rub down between coats with wet and dry,the more coats the better the finish.

Some useful info here :- Coachpainting Info

Back in the 70`s i Hand Painted a car with knowledge from the Step-father.

The Coach Paint and Undercoat along with a proper Coach Painting Brush did a fantastic job and was better than the original.

However the proper stuff ( Paint, Undercoat and Brush ) cost a bloody fortune.............LOL........... but i enjoyed myself doing it.

i'm ashamed to say I painted my Iveco with dulux weathershield. well it was only an Iveco !

valspar was another good paint to use but sadly disappeared several years ago. i used to warm synthetics up on a gas stove in the paint pot of the spraygun then spray them . lovely shine . these days a nice foam roller is ideal for home use.

I can 2nd this, i'm just using synthetic to roller my van , i've done them in the past using tekaloid etc, pick an overcast day but not cold and not too windy, try different mixes with thinners, i have used 25% thinners 75% paint , mix in a seperate clear container so you can mark lines and get the paint equal each time. I did'nt warm my paint. Get a mini roller or two from b&q and a pack of 10 foam rollers. Just lightly roller.

hi. you can buy a measuring stick .its usually got allsorts of percentage marked on them .
before i had one i used old food tins they have ridges on them for use as marks .
i remember my uncle used to use a paint he bought from woolworths .he swore by it . rollered loads of old mail and bt vans . you had a choice red or yellow .
any colour you like ,so long as it was red or yellow .ha ha .

I did my Sons van with Rust-oleum combi color, there's a 'you tube' vid of it somewhere.Ha got it,

We repainted our first motorhome (Brian) with white smoothrite. We used a paint pad. It was never going to be a showroom finish and our drive had spatters of this paint on for a few months. It did tart the outside up a little. I've got some pics somewhere if anyone is interested :raofl:

painting fiber glass

You are best to use a paint designed for fiber glass on the roof, having had a few cannoes in my time you will find most types of paint will start to peal off after a time, through traial and mostly error the best solution I found was a paint called perfection 907, as with all painting good preperation is key.

I have a tin for my roof just one of the thing I need to get round to sorting out.

Squibby.

On fiberglass you need an etching primer first, it eats into the glass then under coat and top.

you are getting a lot of advice on this job, better bring it to the fix it meet in Devon lol :drive: :drive:
