Rant about Dometic Ovens

The previous owner had the original oven, whatever it was, replaced with a Dometic/Cramer CBGC oven/grill. It seems to keep the heat in okay but needs full temp for everything and a halfway time turn around. I have the original bill for about £400 but seen them elsewhere for up to £669, just why so expensive?

The oven in our new (old) van is a Stoves?
Don't know if that's the name of the manufacturer or not and not able to dig out the manuals at the mo.

Never used it in anger yet, so no idea if it's any different to Dometic, how it performs or if it gets the surrounding area too hot...

So far we have only ever needed to use the 4 ring gas hob (Spinflo) and the gas grill.

Stoves is the manufacturer, normal to be paired with a spinflo hob....was a common combination at one point

Is your Stoves oven built in like the Dometic? We had a stand alone Stoves cooker in our old Swift and on the few occasions we used it, it worked perfectly without heating up the surrounding cupboards.

It's a built in. I'll get a photo in a minute...

Here you go.

You will also notice that by setting the oven back all the heat from the vent just goes upwards and destroys the drawer front. Factory solution is to move the oven forward 15mm. Personally I think my idea is better. We just need a drawer front now to complete the conversion but with Covid we may have to wait a bit for the factory to make one.
We have a similar problem. I complained to the dealer and Carthago have agreed to the dealer fitting extra insulation and an extraction fan. Because of Covid the work has been delayed but it is now booked in for November.

The oven in our van has not been used in the 6 years we have had the van because it is situated above eye level what idiot would consider removing a tray of boiling fat or oil from a vessel at that height

That can also happen in some house kitchen installations, never mind motorhomes!

I agree. Maybe because nobody thinks the practicalities through properly?:rolleyes:

Sometimes these fixtures and fittings are definitely more about how good or 'fashionable' they look, rather than how useable or practical they actually are.

Moreover there are practical reasons re correct installation as to why manufacturers do it .i.e proximity to flammable surfaces . A clumsy cost cutting ploy imho But the oven needs to be 50 mm away from a flammable surface 25 mm non flammable

Dont know where they are hoping to put the insulation as there is hardly any room above the oven. Depending on model there is also the side of the fridge cabinet that needs protecting. Especially if you use the grill. The heat from the burner is channeled along the top of the oven and out through the vents at the front. There is no insulation over this part of the oven its just a big void. What are they expecting a fan to do. The whole back of the oven is to hot to touch after 10 minutes. Carthago told Southdowns that they had not had any other complaints.

If you read the installation section it is supposed to be in a box which I expect tries to keep the heat under control.

Dometic also make a similar oven but it has a chimney out the back. Still not going to stop it getting hot mind you.

We have two Neff ovens at home with a cleaning cycle which heats them up beyond anything the Dometic could ever do and the sides of the cupboards hardly get warm.

Chelston said they had done it before and have cleared the work on my motor home with Carthago. I believe the fan will vent to the rear, drawing the heat outside. It sounds like a major job because they have booked it in for several days. When using the grill the door has to be left fully open with the deflector shield hidden at the top of the oven pulled out.

You won’t be a fan of the new Thetford oven then. It has a top hinged door which acts as a heat shield to protect the ROOF.

That is almost identical to how our oven is fitted but it has a standard opening door, I recently had a new Dometic fridge freezer fitted below it, our oven is in a purpose built cabinet above the fridge freezer, we just use the oven as a storage bin.

We have 4 Remouskas 2 in the van and 2 in the bungalow my wife does all sorts of magic in the home ones but the van ones are rarely used as we are rarely on hook up, we also have a unused double skillet, again never used as my wife is not keen on it, our most favourite appliance is the pressure cooker and our three tiered steamer great for veg, our gas grill is rerely used either, it is fitted below the hob in a sensible position, we make our toast on the hob on a wire and tin? Toaster which works really well a large glass lidded frying pan takes care of small joints of meet, chops, bacon, sausages etc and the barbi is king.

They really are a load of crap. The Carthago did have one until today when it suddenly found itself sitting on the driveway. Why has he taken a brand new oven out of a brand new motorhome you may well ask. It sat below the sink with a drawer above for cutlery. When you used the oven everything above it got very very hot. Who designs these things. How can they make something that is hotter on the outside than the inside. When we realised the damage that was being done we decided to do what the rest of Europe does and don't bother with it. We had a Laika before the Carthago and that had a similar oven on top of the fridge / freezer but it had a exhaust through the roof. The cupboard above it got very hot. At one point it was getting far hotter than usual and I took the back out of the cupboard to have a look. The chimney was stuck to the oven with fire cement and the heating and cooling had turned it into powder. Most of it went up the vacuum cleaner hose.

I had a look on the Internet for alternatives but Dometic are the only company that make one so why should they bother about its performance. They rely on the wooden cabinet cabinet that surrounds it to keep the heat in. I was tempted to try and do something with insulation but where do you start when the basic concept is floored before you begin. Because the unit does not have a flue the hot gasses come out of a vent above the door. You can imagine the heat generated by a 1kw gas burner. Within 10 minutes of lighting it up the back of the casing is to hot to touch. This then spreads to the top of the oven so all it does is just heats everything up.

I suppose we could have rejected the Motorhome but apart from this it is really great and we are enjoying our times away.

SWMBO has her eyes on a 2 litre Remoska which uses 400w so we could use it off the inverter.

One thing that really gets me is we have two Neff ovens at home that are self cleaning and they get upto 500 degrees on the cleaning cycle and the cupboard they live in hardly gets warm.

Moan over ....

I thought this was a political thread about Dominick Cummins Until I read it a bit it’s fun being a bit dyslexic gets you into some strange fixes.

Whats the mod?
Rae cut the bottom 5cm off of a 15cm saucepan. Slotted it in 4 places to suit the burner , 2cm, I think, holes in the circumference, and a 5cm hole in the base. The 5 cm hole lines up with the hole in the Omnia base, the slots sit on the burner, the holes in the circumference aid the burn. All in all it raises the Omnia 2-3cm above the worktop no longer giving concerns about burning the worktop. As a bonus, it also raises it higher on the cooker base.
