Pyms Chair Carpark High Peaks National park

I was up there a few weeks ago and spent the Weds, Thurs, Fri and Sat night there. I was packed up and taking the dogs for a last walk when my whippet pooed on the verge of the carpark. I noted it and thought I would pick up on my return. A guy in a four by four wound his window down and asked me to pick up and identified himself as a voluntary ranger. Then told me I was not allowed to over night there. I let it ride but......... There is a sign further up from the carpark on the corner of the junction which clearly sates "This carpark is owned and managed by Forestry Commission". I have been brooding on this as I cannot see how a ranger for the National Park and especially a non paid one has the authority to tell me what I can and cannot do on Forestry Commission ground. Or am I quite wrong?

sorry but!!

Sorry but 4 nights is a bit over the top for my liking and not picking the dog poo up imediatly doesn't help the wild camping cause or the banning of dogs in some places. I have 2 dogs and no matter what time of day or night we pick up STRAIGHT AWAY please.
I noted and was going to do it later doesn't wash with me or the Ranger guy. Sorry if it sounds a little harsh but I don't like my dogs being penalised for other dogs and there owners idleness.

4 nights is 3 too many i think and i agree re the poo.

I agree with campervanannie about the dog poo, even if your intention was to pick it up when you returned somebody else could have stood in it, I pick mine up immediately wherever I am because if I am walking there anybodycould be following,, not sure whether the Ranger has any authority but would he have said anything about parking overnight if you had picked up the poo, you gave a concerned citizen an excuse to complain

Have to say, I am with Annie on this, You should have picked up the poo, as for the forestry ranger guy they normally wear a uniform, and they normally advise people.

As a side, in the Wyre Forest you can take your dog and allow it to poo, they advise you use a stick and flick said poo in the hedgerow/off the path.

Reason people were bagging the poo, then leaving the bags on side of path, sometimes hung up on trees at head height, can you imagine that a Poo Tree.

Interesting reaction. How about some comments on the ranger issue which is my main concern. The carpark is labelled as Forestry Commission. And for the critics I litter pick the carpark before leaving and the said poo was NOT in a stepable position other wise as a responsible dog owner I wound not have even thought of leaving it for ten minutes.

never know

Well every action causes a reaction so we will never know if the ranger would have taken a different tack if he had not seen the poo incident. I have had rangers chat with us when wilding even one at Sandringham he just advised us that if we parked a certain way we could stay for 1 night as it was late.
And the poo no excuse pick up immediately.

I feel in this instance that the ranger has every rite to ask you to pick up the poo.

If I had been there I would have also asked you to pick it up.

i agree with you on the disosal of dog poo, im a "flicker" i take a small plastic kiddies spade thing with me and move into the hedge bottom, out of site out of mind.

Rangers both paid and part time volunteers ussually have agreements with other authorities regards "policing" and would be backed up by the National Park Authority in case of a dispute.

Totally agree with the flicking type of disposal where appropriate. If not then pick it up straight away. I have degenerative disc disease and I suffer from the most horrendous pain when bending to pick up my dogs poo, but I still pick it up as soon as it is done.

The poo bag tree is also a pet hate of mine. Why bother to bag it if you're not going to dispose of it sensibly.

I disagree! There is no need to stay four nights, if that's what you want then find a campsite,
The beauty of motor homing is the choices you have to move around the country and stay ALMOST anywhere , so why upset the local people by camping in one spot for that amount of time?
Spend a night or two max then find some where else nearby if there is still thing to do in the area,
It's very simple! Live and let live, the local people have a right to enjoy their area as well,

Yes typical answers on the 4 nighter, you will be scarred for life by this lot for overstaying your welcome. As to the so called ranger, it is only a bit of intimidation. They have no immediate means to move you on as such. I have been challenged in Snowdonia but what can the ranger do other than state that overnight parking is not allowed. Just nod politely and say you are going and plead ignorance to any said rule. You have had your free camping so do not worry too much - time to move on to another spot, but 4 nights, I was hung drawn and quartered for staying 2. In fact you should arrive 11pm and leave at 7am, that is the only way to get medals on this site.
All I can say to you is the next time you turn up at a favourite spot and the council have put up no MH signs or a low barrier or even a parking meter because some plant pots keep setting up a base camp there and the locals are fed up and as you step out of your van to read the signs you step into a nice big fresh dog turd I hope you remember the day you sided with this person who camped for 4 days and left his dogs sh#t on the grass.

I agree on the dog poo - should have picked it up! My view is on this consecutive night issue.

Here is the scenario, camper 1 arrives one night and goes, then another campervan arrives and goes the following night and it goes on. So for a week a campervan has been there every night - do you really think locals think oh that is ok they are only there for 1 night. Nope, locals and authorities see campervans that there all the time so this 1 night ethic is now absurd as now in 2014 so many campervans are doing, and it not helped by sites likes this that distribute POIs so now everybody gets to hear about the ace spots. Time is already proving that campervans are being barred from many car parks, it is not because of the minority overstaying their welcome, it is because of the majority that are regularly there.
I sort off agree to a point but on this occasion you will never know if the ranger was antagonised because he left the poo I think that ranger may have known he had been there a while and maybe was turning a blind eye to it until he left the poo. Sleeping over in Sandringham is a big no no because of her Royalness but even a ranger their allowed us to stop overnight as long as we were gone early doors, but that would not have happened if my dog had sh# t in front of him and I walked away and left it .
And as for the different vans some locals may see different vans stopping 1/2 nights realise that its holiday makers when it is the same van 3/4 or even 5 nights they start to think gypsies and panic sets in so they bar and bolt their homes and start ringing police, local councils and panic breads panic and the madness takes over .

basicaly the op deserves all he got .he allowed his dog that really knows no better to foul public space . risking someone treading in it or a child to fall or step in it risking disease ,and giving other clean responsible owners a bad name .also a volunteer warden has the same authority as a full time warden same as a special constable has the same authority as a regular officer and should be respected ,one other thing also i see the op as one of the growing number of motor home owners that are basically giving genuine ones a bad name .this site was for good willed members to share tips not for free loaders to abuse ,setting up camp for days on end is not wild camping. wild camping is arrive late move early not stay for days that's free camping

another bad post by someone who cares little

The worst action will always be spotted first and not picking up after the dog is bad. Intending to pick it up later is not acceptable to most people including me as a dog owner.
