To answer the original question, I simply put the Three SIM into the mifi and it worked. As others have said, the security is on the link from the mifi to your computer, which isn't changed by a different SIM.
As far as putting the SIM into an iPad goes, you can, but chances are that you'll need to snap out the tiny size of SIM, and after that it won't fit a mifi. You can get adapters but they can damage mifi SIM holders.
One reason to use a mifi is that you can put it where it gets good signal - in a skylight or even on a pole. No good doing that with an iPad! Another is that several devices can share the connection at once.
For European use, Three has lost its advantage. All networks allow roaming at no extra cost, and the only difference is the pricing. You'll have the same choice of foreign networks with them all.
Carol, you can definitely use one of the 3 data sims in your iPad if it's got a sim slot... it just has to be the right size for the slot. The 12Gb 3 data sim is called 'Trio' I think, which just means that it's three sizes in one... you just keep popping out the next layer until you get down to the size you want, like a Russian dollYou can slowly get through the 12Gb over a period up to a year or you can use it all in one massive download fest... up to you. I'm on my second one and the first one lasted 11 months.
The reason most people put them in a mifi unit is because you can then use that as a wifi hotspot to connect your phone or anything else to the internet if you run out of data allowance... plus a lot of people's tablets/iPads won't take a sim at all because they're purely wifi models. My phone only has 500mb a month because I don't use it much but my mifi unit (with one of those 12Gb sims) takes up the slack when I'm away... for my phone, iPad, laptop, whatever.
Has been posted before, it's £27 for 12gb data sim, which you can use over 12 months from activation, and ORDER TODAY AND YOU WILL GET A FREE 16gb usb stick.

It stands for Virtual Private Network. The idea is that computers can connect together securely as if they were in a private computer network. However, people are using it to connect through, so their internet connection appears to be where the VPN is connected to the internet, rather than where they are connecting their computer from.
You should use a VPN if you use a public WiFi hotspot, because public WiFi can easily be monitored. The VPN makes monitoring much more difficult.
But surely 24GB over 24 months for £39 is much better value!
Sure is, but where is the offer?
Found it! Last time I looked the 24gb sim wasn't available.

Thanks Jenny. I've had a contract sim in my iPad since I got it but I've just cancelled the contract. I've got 4 gb on my phone so I think I may as well put the sim in the iPad though HD makes the point I could move the mifi for better reception. Having said that, it's always been ok wherever I am. Honestly, so much to consider.
Btw, I don't know if I've been had but when cancelling my iPad contract 3 have just doubled ny data to 4 gb and given me unlimited calls for a pound less than I was paying! Where's the catch I wonder?
If you have 4gb of data on your phone why not use the hotspot setting on your phone and connect your ipad to it? That's what I do, I also connect my laptop and I did it while in France last September. You're paying for 4gb of data so why not use it?

Del
You don't need VPN anymore as it's an English sim card.
I use my phone as a hotspot.
That's interesting, I thought if you were roaming you would be using the foreign provider's servers therefore showing their IP address. You don't need VPN anymore as it's an English sim card.
If you are outside the UK, you will need a VPN to receive BBC etc television programmes. I have an EE card and in Spain couldn't get BBC.

Brilliant guy and articles, but to be honest, couldn't be bothered to go to this trouble to watch tv in Spain.
Would rather listen to BBC radio, which isn't blocked.
And if staying for a while, I'd set up satellite dish and watch tv via Intelsat 907.
