Preloaded Mobile WiFi SIM, help needed

The advantage of a VPN, other than for security is that you can set it to show your location as being in the UK and watch Blue Planet 2 whilst in Spain (other programms are available - Strictly anyone?)

Carol, you can definitely use one of the 3 data sims in your iPad if it's got a sim slot... it just has to be the right size for the slot. The 12Gb 3 data sim is called 'Trio' I think, which just means that it's three sizes in one... you just keep popping out the next layer until you get down to the size you want, like a Russian doll :) You can slowly get through the 12Gb over a period up to a year or you can use it all in one massive download fest... up to you. I'm on my second one and the first one lasted 11 months.

The reason most people put them in a mifi unit is because you can then use that as a wifi hotspot to connect your phone or anything else to the internet if you run out of data allowance... plus a lot of people's tablets/iPads won't take a sim at all because they're purely wifi models. My phone only has 500mb a month because I don't use it much but my mifi unit (with one of those 12Gb sims) takes up the slack when I'm away... for my phone, iPad, laptop, whatever.

To answer the original question, I simply put the Three SIM into the mifi and it worked. As others have said, the security is on the link from the mifi to your computer, which isn't changed by a different SIM.
As far as putting the SIM into an iPad goes, you can, but chances are that you'll need to snap out the tiny size of SIM, and after that it won't fit a mifi. You can get adapters but they can damage mifi SIM holders.
One reason to use a mifi is that you can put it where it gets good signal - in a skylight or even on a pole. No good doing that with an iPad! Another is that several devices can share the connection at once.
For European use, Three has lost its advantage. All networks allow roaming at no extra cost, and the only difference is the pricing. You'll have the same choice of foreign networks with them all.

I've found that the micro and nano portions of the Trio sim will fit snugly back into the bigger bit easily HD... I've switched mine around between devices in the past when I was having a problem with my mifi unit. Being stiff cardboard-ish stuff, it doesn't damage anything like the black plastic ones can.

Thanks Jenny. I've had a contract sim in my iPad since I got it but I've just cancelled the contract. I've got 4 gb on my phone so I think I may as well put the sim in the iPad though HD makes the point I could move the mifi for better reception. Having said that, it's always been ok wherever I am. Honestly, so much to consider.
Btw, I don't know if I've been had but when cancelling my iPad contract 3 have just doubled ny data to 4 gb and given me unlimited calls for a pound less than I was paying! Where's the catch I wonder?

bought two from amazon last september they were dirt cheap about £50 the pair and worked great all over france spain & portugal , i don’t have internet at home only use my phone and these in i pad, just about to run out so ordered two more now £76 but that’s still good value ,

Silly question alert! Can I put a preloaded sim into my iPad or does it have to go int a mifi?
it depends on your I pad or tablet some have simm ports some don't not all. Are 3 g ready .plenty of 3g tablets on eBay cheap .

It stands for Virtual Private Network. The idea is that computers can connect together securely as if they were in a private computer network. However, people are using it to connect through, so their internet connection appears to be where the VPN is connected to the internet, rather than where they are connecting their computer from.
You should use a VPN if you use a public WiFi hotspot, because public WiFi can easily be monitored. The VPN makes monitoring much more difficult.

I must be getting thick, I didn't understand a word of that!

I'm thick as well and when my new 24gb card arrives it will get put in the iPad and taken to our local My3 shop and the very knowledgeable Staff will be asked what we have to do to make it work in France (where we use it most)

They will reassuringly sort out what, if anything, has to be done and give expert advice and we will confidently take it abroad knowing it will work as it should do.

That's what we did last year with the 12gb card, that has been used up, and it worked a treat wherever we went.

Most towns have a My3 shop and they will do this for free.

Hope this helps.

If you have 4gb of data on your phone why not use the hotspot setting on your phone and connect your ipad to it? That's what I do, I also connect my laptop and I did it while in France last September. You're paying for 4gb of data so why not use it?

They gave me the extra data free after I said I didn't use it as a hotspot. Didn't understand why they gave it to me as I was cancelling my iPad data sim contract!

I have 30gb of data unlimited calls and unlimited texts for £16a month and free go binge when and if I sign up for Netflix. Thats with 3very happy with the deal. You don't need VPN anymore as it's an English sim card.
I use my phone as a hotspot.

If you are outside the UK, you will need a VPN to receive BBC etc television programmes. I have an EE card and in Spain couldn't get BBC.

:p

That's interesting, I thought if you were roaming you would be using the foreign provider's servers therefore showing their IP address.
This is how a VPN works, you connect through servers in your chosen country and then they give you an IP address in that country.

Exactly, as I understand it the roaming charges no longer apply but not sure re data transfer speeds or in the case of the quote above the BBC allow access now are free of restriction. Roaming charges ( as was) and VPN are two different things

VPN in effect when you are in France tricks the BBC host by mimicking a UK IP address therefore allows download if it picks up the IP address is abroad it doesn't.

In the past underground web pages have avoided detection by using VPN networks often multi pinging so difficult to trace by even such as the FBI

Often VPN service providers or their servers located in places like Switzerland where privacy laws are different

Channa

how I understand it anyway

Brilliant guy and articles, but to be honest, couldn't be bothered to go to this trouble to watch tv in Spain.

Would rather listen to BBC radio, which isn't blocked.

And if staying for a while, I'd set up satellite dish and watch tv via Intelsat 907.

Barry

Hi Barry, I'm interested in how you listen to BBC radio? Is it with wifi?
