Spending local

We take with us what is unavailable or dear abroad.

If there is a local bread shop We buy bread even though it is cheaper in the supermarkets. If any one comes round selling bread, fruit or veg then we buy anything we need. It all helps to keep the locals happy. After all they are the ones who can object to the aires.

Visiting the local markets is part of the holiday,

We have often visited aires in towns or villages that we would not have bothered with if there wasn't an aire in the book .After the first few days there is always something that we need to buy

In Britain We are usually miles from anywhere so we don't shop near to where we overnight

Aires book

been watching various mentions of the "Aires book", where can i purchase this item
Thanks
John

Aires book

on internet, search for 'all the aires France' or camperstop Europe or buy the local books when you get to France or Germany

i agree ,in Britain the government and county councils and local councils will treat motor homes like rough travellers of the piky type and will not allow parking,so you are forced to use caravan.camp sites ,Britain should be like France on this subject ,police as well.

I must be odd then cos i like to shop wherever i am, i get home from work, jump in the van and am off, i ALLWAYS shop local, keep my reciept just in case some jobsworth comes a knocking and has a complain about us freeloaders, i also treat it as part of my break, if i shopped at home, its home and its the same old same old, whereas when your away its more of a novelty, i think.... anyway, thats me and i like it that way

Here we go again! Are you going to pollute every thread that I'm in with this childish obsession? For anyone who doesn't know a couple of us have disagreed with this man's view on Britain and on his conspiracy theory views, some of which are positive signs that he's convinced that the entire world is waiting to get him.

Now, like some scorned lover, he appears to be stalking me at every opportunity. It's very worrying, not for me of course, but I do wonder what's driving him.

Moderator, where are you?

Tut Tut Tut Tut
Be careful, VERY careful

As an antiques dealer, I can't help heading into any town or village, you never know where your next great find will be.

Foodwise, I don't take anything apart from what I need for the journey. I tend to call in to a shop when I'm close to my destination.

hi. for many of us the destination is back home . the journey just takes 6months and is an adventure . we dont really know where we will be or when. except we hope to be home in spring /summer.
yes look in the villages etc for bargains. as well as toolshops . leccy shops etc . might even come home with a rare m,bike in the back but dont think that really counts in this thread. ha ha .

Interesting thread.....

For us what is really good is after overnighting , is to go and find somewhere really great for a nice breakfast. After all we have wildcamped for free, so why not put something back into the local economy(although it must be a really good breakfast!). Although it's not the end on the world if we can't find a breakfast venue we can always make breakfast in the Duetto.

In fact this has got me thinking..........

Why not have a "Good breakfast" section on here 'Phil, or perhaps a "Good Local Eats" section when out in our campers?
(preferably with MH parking not too far away)

EG: We love a really good fish & chips when at the seaside, but it's hard to find a really good one.

We were overnighting on the sea front at Exmouth recently-anyone know of any good eats around there?

Thanks

Just got back yesterday from a five month trip so yes I do shop locally otherwise I would starve. To be honest on our return we have found the supermarket prices in the UK crazy. Food is crap and overpriced. I think we got used to what to buy and what not to buy in the countries we visited in Europe. People say France is expensive. No its not really. Yes some things are more than here but equally some are not and their stuff is just better. We stayed mainly on Aires, Sostas, Stellplatz or wilding with the odd ACSI campsite thrown in where there was no alternitive. Most nights were free.

Of course you shop locally but I never feel obliged to abroad. Are the locals that fussed though? You would think so but we stayed on a few remote aires that were free but there was nothing to spend money on for miles. Some of them even had free services and EHU! It seems barmy to us but maybe the French feel its just good for the general economy to get the vans there. After all thousands of us choose to spend our money over there as they make it easy and attractive for us. The fact that we had a proper summer with glorious sunshine and warmth most of the time helps I suppose!

Im going to have to go back though soon as I discovered Leffe Beer which is simply superb. About a tenner for a massive case and Lidl do a copy which isnt half bad for peanuts. Went to buy some in Tescos yesterday and its £5.29 for 4 x 330ml bottles!!!! Eh! Whats that about. Do the bottles get gold plated or something on the short journey from Belgium to Tescos? Crackers.

No the bottles don't change the conversion rate does, they seem to add a ripoff figure to the price as they know that like fools we will still buy the stuff.

hi. our local coop as gotbfosters 10x 440ml for £6.50. not quite as cheap as in mainland europe but not too bad. add a splash of spanish brandy gives them a bi of bite. not my tipple really . fosters is a bit weak. at 4%. hope i dont end up with that ozzy drawl in my speach. ha ha.
better go before the sheila shouts at me .

4%!!! no good to me Alan since Ive been on the Leffe all summer at 6.6%. Even Stella tastes like dishwater now.

ITs a slippery slope now for me now Im back home. Ill be reaching for the special brew tramp lager next!

If you have about five hours to spare this years trip is all documented online at Hank the Tank Motorhome website under Blog, summer 2011

None of its useful but it might make you smile. Especially the bit about the Stellplatz killer and the swamped out Aires and Sostas

i did say splash of spanish brandy in it to give bite. didnt you come back loaded up?
i,m staying here this winter ,ran out of beer ,still have a few wine and brandy etc. but like you miss the stronger brews. keep thinking i may have to go just to top up stores. hopefully a few mates will bring the odd gift back when they return from winter travels. should have brought more home earlier this year. good job i brought lots of the brandy .hee hee .cheaper than coke.

Alan you must have done the sums, of the two much better savings to be made bringing back brandy than beer. Especially say the Lidls brandy special offers. I bring back some Solera brandy, can get it quite cheaply in the Jerez region, it's not the 10 year aged Gran Reserva tho'....... more the 2 year old Gran Giveaway.
San Miguel varies in strength but around 5%, depending on the brewery (Linares best) and can brews usually stronger than bottled, but not a bad beer?

hi ron.i,m quite happy with lidl,s cheap premier pils. prefer a dark beer but beggers cant be choosers.
find most lagers need either brandy or a shot of cheap whiskey in them. again lidl,s match the criteria with their queen margott. best is fathers day in spain . they drop the solera brandy nicely. cleared out two lidls this year. mind there was 3 of us . get funny looks when you trundle through with trolleys full. have lots of fun bob left yesterday well got on ferry. i like it here in the rain n cold .

Try to at least buy the essentials (bread-milk-croissants etc.) locally when ever we can.
