Vans in for MOT. Its passed but all four tyres are cracking at the sides. They are the continental camping tyres but all of them are ten years old so they have recommended replacing them. £230 each!! :( Ive said go ahead as I really have no choice. I've seen debates about whether normal van tyres will do and obviously they will likely be £100 cheaper each but with it being a 4.25t van, carrying the scooter etc and also stood for months on end I guess its probably best to have the best tyres suited for the job.

What with the service and MOT on top thats my day ruined. :D

Yeah, not worth mucking about with Barry. Yuv done the right thing.

Thats what I thought. I remembered a thread on another forum where opinions were 50/50 on whether normal van tyres would do and of course the camping tyres are a harsh ride but for the reasons given and that its going to get some proper hammer this year I think its best to have the best tyres. Just wasn't expecting it. Loads of tread left on them. I hate being put on the spot like that but it is what it is. New Tyre on the Vstrom tomorrow thats another £175 and the Biff Chariot MOT tomorrow which hopefully wont need anything!! Ferkin ell! :(

There`s no pockets in shrouds, get some of that secret hoard spent you tight bugger 😱 :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Load rating is the most important figure you need to know, and the more you exceed it the better, I think. If it's the best you want, may be a good idea to look at Michelin CrossClimate range.
Although if you want the best of the best, has to be BFGoodrich.

I haven't checked, but I doubt a premium branded commercial tyre will be £100 less anyway.

Did you try blackcircle tyres for a price?
230 ouch!!!

No. I just went with what the garage said. I trust them. I was on the spot really, its a 50 mile round trip as well but I googled black circle continentals just now and they range from £160-£200 depending on size, rating etc and I dont have that info to hand but Im guessing their price will be similar. Its not worth bringing it back, sourcing them myself and then getting the fitted later. The schedule of Van related events is now a bit tight as well. I think the tyres on old Hank were usually about £50. :D Mind you I was forever changing them. If those tyres that are on have done 18000 miles and lasted ten years thats not bad I guess.

What do you guys run Camper tyres at pressure wise? I think ours were at 79psi but I have asked them to reduce them to 75psi. I know its not much but apparently it can make a difference to the harsh rattly ride.

I would recommend Camping tyres every time on a van like yours. I could get away with Commercials on the rear two axles on my Tag Axle vans but I put good quality Camping tyres on the front axle.

You need to work it out from info on tyres.

Max psi on tyre will be for the full load rating. From that you can work out your correct psi for your actual weight. Deviating from that will incur compromises.

Thanks. Looks like I have made the right decision then. Im still miserable though. Imagine all the French cheese and Leffe I could have bought with that!

If it makes you feel any better Barry, I have just polished off a huge dish of baked Camembert topped with Cranberry sauce and a few Cucumber crudites, It was to die for.

Don't mention it, I know you'd do the same for me. :)

Have you checked they are 3PMSF?
I'd say that's a deal breaker/maker if you use your van all year, especially in Europe.

Just looked that up Mark.

Can you really get 'excellent grip on snow and slush' - what's the technology behind that?

Normal van tyres are just as good as they can handle weight, and at a fraction of price, this springs to mind. 😂

I had to google that as well. I suspect they will be the same as the ones that came off. Not sure they will be up to snow though but my skiing days are long behind me anyway. As long as they are grippy on wet grass that will do. For £230 though I should be expecting them to hover over the snow like out of Back to the Future.
