Northern Lights March 2012

Update from Space Weather

ANOTHER STRONG FLARE

So much for the decay of sunspot AR1429. The active region unleashed another strong flare on March 13th, an M7-class eruption that peaked around 1741 UT. A first-look image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory show's the flare's extreme ultraviolet flash. The blast accelerated energetic protons toward Earth and a solar radiation storm is now developing around our planet.

Update from Space Weather

CME IMPACT:

As expected, the flank of a CME hit Earth's magetic field today, March 15th, around 1300 UT. A high-latitude geomagnetic storm might be in the offing

Aurora Watch is currently on RED alert for UK wide Auroras....lets hope the activity lasts and for clear skies tonight.

Aurora Watch has just turned Amber ! Possible Auroras across the Northern zones of the Uk

Low cloud here :mad2:

Checked several times last night but cloudy sky so nothing seen.

Aurora Watch is YELLOW at the moment and is showing ongoing activity...it will likely go one way or the other...however the skies have cleared over Northern Ireland and that may continue Eastwards....keep and eye on Aurora watch because it might just go Red for a period.

Welcome to AuroraWatch UK

Sounds great. I must get the scope out tomorrow and take a few images. Last time I did, it looked like delamerebuilding@hotmail.co.uk

A definite glow can be seen low down on the northern horizon here at Inverkirkaig near Lochinver (zero light pollution).

NOt much hope of seeing anything here in Kent then

What are you crying about?....you get a glow on your northwestern horizon every night of the year...I think it's called Aurora Londonialis;)

Clear Skies are moving into Northern Ireland as I post. The cloud cover is clearing across the the UK too from the NW....it's looking very promising now for clear skies tomorrow evening as there is clear sky out in the Atlantic.....I'd say we're possibly in for a really good chance of seeing the Aurora on Sunday evening as the CME and geo magnetic storm is due to arrive tomorrow!

Make your plans now lol....
