NO MORE OVERNIGHT STAYS IN SCARBOROUGH

Means I have an important decision to make

The Stephen Joseph Theatre is one of my top three favorite theatres.
(Theatre by the Lake, Keswick & Hull Truck if you must know!).

I am not so bad with having a base nearby. It’s only a short drive to Scarborough if I want to go. Have only been once in the summer and that was in the car with two of the son in laws just for a day out.

If we are at Flamborough we often have a ride through and then straight back out again. 😂 Actually not true. I like to look at Peasholme park as so many childhood memories from summer holidays there. Sailing my little yacht on the little boating lakes there. I know that makes me sound cute but I wasn't. 😁

The word does begin cu

BUT there are deff plenty of beautiful places to visit that are happy to take our coin .
Sadly, we are not the saviour of the high street in any town! As a proportion of take, I would guess a car with four people in it, no facilities at all and no sleeping area will spend a great deal more! And from what we have seen, parked up in "beautiful places" most seem to cater at least in part for themselves.

Most cars don’t carry four, some only a single person.
And some motorhomes do carry four or more.
But say after carrying out a survey of car owners visiting Scarborough it’s discovered they spend far less than Motorhome owners. Would Scarborough council then consider banning cars in favour of motorhomes.
My point is why should we alone be judged by our worth to local communities, and based on the outcome be denied or allowed access to what is public parking at night, paid for by us in our taxes and road fund licence.

Car of 4 on a wet Tuesday in February (with flask and sandwiches) ? Unlikely
Many of us travel off season .
Yes many take everything with them but plenty don't.
The very fact we stay overnight means we make more use of shops and cafes etc

But don’t let’s go down this route of comparing us with car drivers or anyone else,
As far as I am concerned if anyone wants to drive to Scarborough (or anywhere else) park their car and spend nothing, I see nothing wrong in them doing that.
We alone are burdened with this responsibility of supporting local communities, and have our “value” debated, monitored and judged.
We do spend money when we can, because we choose to, not because I feel obliged to.
But if others spend nothing, that’s fine.

Some of it will be perceptions some of it will be possibly prejudice but I think it's undeniable that a lot of motorhomers don't necessarily contribute to the local economies much but they do clog up roads and take up a lot of space and are extremely visual and especially along the front in Scarborough. Cars are just cars and nobody notices them as they are just a presence everywhere. A hundred motorhomes however taking up all the parking spots, that doesn't go unnoticed.

I've seen it all summer along the south west. People overnighting in places I wouldn't stop for a sandwich in let alone overnight when there are perfectly good CLs, Aires or sites around. The only reason can be to save money so I don't imagine for a minute they are contributing anything to the economy. Im playing devil's advocate here before anyone shoots me down but I can see why the bans happen when lots of us congregate in the same place. I don't necessarily agree with it but when you look at it this way it's not surprising.

The average time for a car to park when visiting places is four hours (source RAC). If people are visiting places like this, it would be unusual to be a single in a car. So if a car parks for four hours with just two in the car, they move on to make way for another car with two or more. They stay for four hours and another car can use that space. Then of course, there is the evening and nighttime economy. If a motorhome, even with four in it (I don't think I have ever seen that!) parks for 24 hours, they are going to spend far less than those in cars!

We are not the saviour of any town or business. As a proportion of spend, I would guess we are almost invisible to the spend of "normal" holiday makers. The sooner we as a group realise that no one owes us free or very cheap holidays, the more likely it is we would be welcomed!

Sorry but I am not into the business of comparing us with anyone else in order to justify whether or not we should be able to spend a day or two in a car park. I have nothing against what anyone does whilst in Scarborough or anywhere else.

But possibly it should be noted the ratio of cars to motorhomes when drawing comparisons. Normally cars vastly outnumber motorhomes, and in my one and only visit to Scarborough that was very much the case.

But I refuse to feel that I have to justify my visit to Scarborough or anywhere else.

As vehicle tax payers we are owed the use of roads and parking as much as car drivers are.

Going by your outlook we should all abandon motorhoming and go to B&B's in cars or only use sites? There are many places where motorhomers spending is much appreciated by local businesses, not the busy seaside towns perhaps but many more rural towns and villages.

Thanks Rob, but at the risk of being a complete bore, we really have to stop falling for this rubbish about us having to justify ourselves based on how much we spend.
It’s a false premise put out by some who basically don’t like us.
Anyway my memory of my one and only visit to Scarborough was seagull mess, I have never seen anything like it. :)

Feel free to shoot him down.

Right bloody troublemaker that Barry.
Oh I have heard he reckons he’s DISHY :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

As I said earlier Bill, Scarborough isn't my cup of tea anyway and to be honest I generally don't like busy seaside towns. But there are places who do not so much rely on but very much appreciate the revenue from visiting motorhomes as was highlighted in a recent thread where local businesses opposed a ban.

Times are hard for small businesses at the moment. But you are right, we shouldn't have to justify our visits.

As a group we , unfortunately , require to be controlled , apparently . Not all going to agree with that but problems are [can be] caused by people in motorhomes
Easy to make bans seasonal in hotspots . They do it for dogs on beaches !
Many of us travel off season . I'd imagine the majority of rented motorhomes don't . Suspect strongly they are the cause of a high percentage of the problem

Problems are caused by all sorts of people. But they are not monitored as to their value, which is then dependent on whether they’re welcome or not. What they could have done was limit numbers and duration of stay. I have no issues with that. I accept that our requirements are different, and that we have muppets in motorhomes who reckon spending weeks in the one place is ok. But these individuals should be dealt with.

Of course the answer is to provide designated motorhome parking and designated car parking and they should not overlap. When you get a free for all and it's full of motorhomes something's got to give and it's always us that gets banned.

There is nothing wrong with having a cheap day out in the van of course. We don't owe anyone a living but let's face it, if we were such a massive source of income there would be plenty of local businesses lobbying for us and there isn't.

I wouldn't say that we were a massive source of income Barry, but there are places where we are significant.

Some businesses do object to motorhome bans though but councils will always bow to the voters rather than a few business owners.
