Ok, so I have to confess some professional interest here, but I'm a little disappointed that aside from 1 Italian, 1 Swedish (trilogy), 1 New Zealand, 1 German, 1 Japanese - all suggestions thus far have been American, British or French. It's a big world out there folks, I am proposing that some diversion to some beautifully unbeaten tracks might be of use.
I have plenty of American and British suggestions too but, for those wanting to push the boat out a little, these are must sees:
Story of the Weeping Camel (Mongolia/Germany) if you watch this and aren't weeping yourself you're not human (or a camel)
Pyaasa (India) ditto on tear jerking 1950s musical melodrama
Tale of Tales (Russia) 25 minute animation, elegaic, monumental, achingly beautiful; not exactly Wallace and Gromit...
La Dolce Vita (Italy) classic Italian film exploring the morality of papparazi press long before phone hacking scandals.
Pan's Labyrinth (Spain) twisted adult fairytale - visually stunning.
Alamar (Mexico) recent film which explores a father and son relationship - great travelogue too though (makes me want to wild in Mexico)
My Neighbour Totoro (Japan) The best Ghibli animation by far (much more of an enigmatic and beautiful fairytale than Spirited Away IMO)
Oldboy (South Korea) perhaps not one for a 17 yr old, but wow is this a revenge film!
Battle of Algiers (Italy) want to see where all those documentary camera techniques in the Bourne films come from? They begin here.
Underground (Yugoslavia/France/Germany/Bulgaria/Czech Republic/Hungary) wild anarchic romp of a movie, great gypsy soundtrack too.
Not everyone's cup of tea (chai, coffee, can of coke!) I'm sure, but that's the point.
