Motorhome Wi-Fi

This thread has got me looking again to get an external antenna .... Any recommendation for an Omni-directional fixed one?

I liked the idea of having one on the TV Ariel post but there would not be enough gap between roof and ariel when lowered
Poynting Puck V1.
Have a look in 10 or so days' time!

I use my phone as a hot spot and place it in a roof light or on the van roof to improve the signal strength.

Connect phone to the TV via a type C to HDMI lead to stream to the TV.

This works for me.

Could make it more complicated by obtaining a modem but personally I don’t see the point. But I may be right or wrong of course. Just obtain the right duel SIM phone with a C connector that can stream HDMI and then the right SIM for the country you happen to be in at the time.

The Samsung Galaxy 10+ is cheap enough at pre owned stores and works for me although it is not 5G so that may be the next upgrade required but not just yet. iPhones are problematic so I avoid these as I use apps that are not in official play stores.

In the U.K. I use O2. Llamaya in Spain and Reglo in France.

I have the Avtex wifi unit fitted to my van with EE sim found it brilliant used it all over. Only place it didn’t work was near RSPB Leighton Moss but apparently nothing works there. Used it on Shet Orkney great coverage

When this was first mentioned to me a while back I wondered if the relatively high price was worth it. But when you add up the cost of getting similar products, it doesn't look too bad at all.
The Dual SIM feature can be handy (I have sometimes needed to manually take out one SIM from my router and put in another to get a usable service) and the ability to switch between Mobile and Wi-Fi (if there is a wifi service available) could still be very useful on occasion I guess (what the old motorhome WiFi or Uquiti kit could do but with maybe less hassle and a better interface?)

My new iPhone 13 pro-max has a second sim facility by way of an e-sim not physically 2 sim slots. I’ll see if Reglo offer the e-sim as an option.

No way anymore will i us a google spying mobile as a network, phone going mad and full of bugs, same emails/web sites on linux just picked up bits of spyware and stopped it, next ph will be lebrim 5.
Then today spotted and stopped the google spy car in my street, driver was very aggressive when I ask him to not pic my house as thats how google let gangsters find your m home, he said I can do as i please on a public rd, my home is not public.

Trev, if anybody nicked your van he'd soon be caught cos anybody on these forums would recognise it straight away - then he'd be certified as insane and put away!
Seriously though, if it bothers anybody about their house being shown, you can request it to be blurred out - https://inews.co.uk/news/technology/google-streetview-remove-home-how-to-213987

or move somewhere remote. Streetview for my house shows a car from around 10 years ago and even that is at a distance as taken from the junction.

This is what the inside of a Poynting 4G-EXPOL looks like, one of the many overhanging branches in Albania knocked the top of it off and as you can see one side of the cross has been snapped off.

Currently in Switzerland and country 26 of the 29 planned over a six month period from March. The Poynting is paired with a Netgear Nighkhawk and an EE sim with the roam abroad pass.

It still works fine, just not as well as it did. By that I mean since the ‘accident’ if we are well out of site of a tower, we’re reduced to social media but have never lost signal altogether despite staying in some pretty remote places. Can’t complain about that - apart from having to buy another one when we get home 🙄

Wondered what they had inside, I've got a whole one 😉 which I occasionally use on my TV mast with a Huawei B535 router but the EXPOL is rarely needed to get a signal.

I originally was using a portable router with an Aeriel. This season I have used my phone as a hotspot. Been fine so far I about 6 locations watching Netflix Prime etc.
As 5G extends it will get even better
why pay for anything else?

Because some of us go to locations where there is not even MW or LW radio signals never mind 5G. If you only visit towns and villages your argument stands up, but if you visit rural places a proper system can make all the difference.

I understand later iPhones will support e-sims on the following networks in France ....
Bouygues Telecom
Orange
SFR
Truphone
Ubigi
As Reglo are solely reliant on SFR infrastructure, it might be a possibility.

I like the idea of an E Sim. It makes so much sense if it can be used across all networks. when you go abroad and roaming is on with Vodafone at least it simply finds the best local provider, presumably who Vodafone has an agreement with. The net result is you pretty much have a signal everywhere, much better than in the UK. It would be good to be able to switch to any network in the UK with a similar roaming type deal either through an E sim or thinking about it why dont UK providers just provide UK roaming? Im off up to the Scottish Isles next week where I know Vodafone will be weak but other providers might not be like EE. What joy it would be to just either automatically switch to the best provider or be able to swap via an E sim.

That needs cooperation, rarely adopted unless enforced by Government. As you say, it's quite bizarre that when you leave your providers service area and roam, you get a better service!

Crazy innit? The technology exists to give us coverage pretty much seamlessly without sim cards everywhere(ish) but its likely providers that are holding us back. We already have most stuff in the cloud. If I transfer computers or phones its an absolute doddle to just access all the stuff I had on the old device. Messing about with tiny little sim cards and adaptors and being out of signal while the person next to you has five bars is ridiculous.

There is no way that Reglo mobile will offer the esim. (I don’t think!!)
As far as I know, only Vodaphone and EE offer this in U.K.
I recently contracted for an esim with EE and use my Reglo mobile sim as a second line.
Can very much recommend and the signal and amount of data far superior to Three which I used to use!

I had a look and I have the special security option enabled in Streeview ;)

If you are just passing, you may see a Motorhome ....

But go in for a closer look and it morphs into a old caravan :D

This thread has got me looking again to get an external antenna .... Any recommendation for an Omni-directional fixed one?

I liked the idea of having one on the TV Ariel post but there would not be enough gap between roof and ariel when lowered
I used a poynting X-pol A0001 antenna mounted to the side of the roof entry box for the solar wiring, I then used the same roof entry point for the antenna co-ax. It's quite streamlined 'end on' into the wind but it is a couple of inches higher than anything else on the roof so I kept it's mounting onto the roof entry box quite 'weak' and used just 2 M3 nylon bolts, I figured if it got a whack from a tree or whatever then the bolts would give way before anything else and I'd save the antenna/roofbox. It's been on about 3 years and hasn't fell off yet!

A puck type would have been preferable tbh as they have slightly better sensitivity.
You can get a substantial increase in sensitivity by using a directional antenna but you'll need to be able to steer it. Consider 'grafting' a directional panel antenna on the rear of your TV antenna, I did this with a wi-fi antenna some years ago. TV antenna still fully retracts.

I did consider the idea of using the TV Ariel as a mount but two things ....
1) mounting on the post was out as not enough post when retracted.
2) directional antenna would mean a case of EITHER using TV OR using Internet unless lucky and both signal sources happen to align. I am greedy and want BOTH :)
I still have the Ubquti directional radio/antenna kit (the same kit that Motorhome Wifi used to sell) and I was originally going to fit a second TV Mast specifically for that, so rising and rotating from inside nicely, but times have moved rapidly and a WiFi only solution is no good anymore.

FWIW, I have chosen a solution and it includes a 'puck' style antenna :)
