Motorhome insurance parked on the road side

I'm about a month away from renewal and currently with AIB. It shot up last year when we changed vans (Well I expected it to) but we are paying a premium for it to be parked on the road in front of our house. It does fit on my drive and it stays on there over winter but its a right PIA at times and especially when its biking weather and I need to get my motorcycles out so I paid the extra so I can leave it overnight for a week or two on the front. Its a tiny quiet village at the top of North Yorkshire and pretty much zero crime.

Comfort have already told me they wont insure me for the road side at all and I think thats a case with a few others. I know Safeguard and AIB will. Ripe insurance is by far the cheapest by a mile but they dont offer it either.

Just wondering who you are with if you pay for overnight parking on the road.

Dont understand why folks buy homes without plenty of space as more than a motorhome parking required.

No idea what extra it cost to park on road.

@marchie got quotes for roadside, or in a secured compound; roadside was lower as he could see it from his home I think.

Not a lot of choice Barry. I'm with Safeguard . Can't remember the other company I can use but , last time I checked, they were almost double Safeguard. I pay over £70

I was with Markerstudy, although through AIB, until last August when AIB claimed Markerstudy no longer did motorhome insurance. Now with Jensten, also via AIB. Markerstudy were great -- they'd recorded both my home address and also that of the storage facility where I normally keep the van and were OK with the van being parked in the road near my home for 'reasonable periods' whereas the previous underwriters (Kinetic via Adrian Flux) would not cover the van for theft if not at the storage facility unless we were living in it at the time (so sleeping each night); which meant I couldn't take the van home to load up the day before a trip.

Looks like the choices will be limited then. Pity about Markerstudy not doing motorhome insurance then if they allowed a reasonable amount of time. I tried Adrian Flux online but the site I was on only seemed to give you options for cars despite me selecting motorhomes from their menu. Ill give them a call at some point.

Have you considered a joint car/motorcycle/motorhome policy Barry?

I have heard of such things before and I'm sure Adrian Flux asked me to consider similar once.

My motorhome and car are parked on the road outside my house ,with the cctv on them i`m with Scenic /allianz. I was with admiral last year i did swear i`d never use them after some one run in the back of me and it took ages to pay out,but they were cheapest . Admiral have phoned me everyday so far.

I tried that when i bought the car but i had to start again with no ncb. (ROBBING BA""""RDS.)

I think AIB can be a bit dodgy for getting proof of no claims as well. Some say they have, some say the haven't. Not considered a joint policy for all vehicles Rob. I think that might be a nightmare to sort out as they will all be at different dates. I know with the two bikes I tried that and it worked out cheaper to do them individually. Cost isn't so much of an issue but I don't like paying through the nose if I don't have to. It was around £850 last year but I was up against it time wise as it all happened so fast and we needed to get away. I have a month to sort it this year.

True, Jo. 'More secure outside your house than in a compound; you'll be aware of a problem much earlier, so lower risk for you and us'

There is actually. On a farm about three miles away under cover. I think its about £500 for the year but I would rather have the van at home plus under cover with no hookup the batteries will run flat. I suppose it will stop the roof going green though.

I suspect ill end up with AIB or Safeguard. Just putting the feelers out.

I have just done mine with safeguard as it was £470 including eu/uk breakdown cover. Comfort who we have been with for donkeys years could not get within £80 of them for same cover barring contents which safeguard set lower.
I was reluctant to leave comfort but £80 is a few glasses of IPA.

Yes. Well whoever they used does. To be fair to AIB when I was under pressure last year when I got the van their agent did a lot of work finding one to suit our needs.

On a slight tangent Barry Safeguard were fantastic at providing me with proof of no claims earlier this year.

Previously we both had policies, me on the motorhome with the wife as named driver and vice versa on the car, wife`s policy with me as named driver then we both built up no claims " just in case ".

Now our motorhome is sold and only have a car i took over the car policy so needed proof of no claims from Safeguard to transfer to the new insurer.

I rang Safeguard and got the proof by email whilst i was actually still talking to them on the phone, accepted by the new insurer job done
