Machete or gardening shears?

I have a stihl battery chainsaw I use up trees and it is a great tool quiet and light If I thought about it I would take it with me to cut smallish things. It was trifle dear though but as I have it it just need bringing along. A pair of Aldi loppers is useful for twigs and small branches.

We just take the Fiskar X5 camping set. Which has a small axe, saw and knife. Ideal when wild camping in the French side of the Ardennes where there is no maintenance at all on the tracks. In the more civilised places we try to not touch nature. Fire wood bought or scoured can be chopped as well of course.

I have to assume Clunegapyears is a windup merchant! Pity help us if not......

ive got a ryobi battery reciprocating saw, fraction of the price of a stihl chainsaw, recip saw with green wood and metal blades , mini grinder and drill and a couple of batteries and solar charging yer covered for most things

Just a thought but I always considered the “wild” bit of wild camping meant that you fitted into the wildness not that you made the wildness fit you. If you are looking for this mindset on a grand scale with a lot of camper vans involved then have some sympathy with the Dartmoor rangers who are trying to move on a large illegal encampment. Their actions are making any inroads into allowing wild camping on Dartmoor using camper vans even more difficult. And before anyone starts the bylaws allow limited wild camping in tents but not using a vehicle. The hope has always been to get this law relaxed but recent events make this unlikely.
Rainbow gatherings will not have any motorhomes or vans on the sits. You trek in and everything will be there, may be tents or benders. Only place you would find vehicles is wherever they park and leave them but doubt there are many motorhomes among them

No she's not. She's a very experienced motorhomer & wild camper, currently not based in the UK.

She will very good reason for wanting this kit where they are, and it will definitely not for be for any ill thought out, illegal or selfish use.

Are you the one being the windup merchant, perhaps? :)

Always a bit dangerous to make assumptions, @Holmzie1 ;)

Just occasionally we want to chop back at branch or two so that we can access a wild parking (not damaging the countryside, honest) or chop a bit of wood for the fire. Thinking about either getting gardening shears or a machete. Appreciate both will need sharpening.
Which do you recommend? And have any of you ever had any problems carrying a machete given it is potentially a dangerous weapon? And we promise not to use it on any generator users!
Assuming you are referring to chopping old dead wood a folding saw would serve you better than either of your options. Never cut into live trees. Apart from the issue of damaging the environment, they don't burn well.

The media thrive on bad stories and sensationalism.

The really sad thing is that when/if you manage to get down to the actual facts of the matter, rather than the twisted versions that sprout up across all media types, the damage has already been done as far as Joe Public's perception is concerned.

I'm not disbelieving you, just puzzled.
Did the report say if they were planning to stay long?
[/

on the TV the car park was full of cars and vans being used by them, clearly in shot and clearly used by them. The guy from the Dartmoor National Park gave a factual report of the sItuation and the action needed as requests to move on had been ignored or met with abuse. As I said it is nor a good image.
Illegal campers to be evicted if they don't leave

People who are camping illegally at a beauty spot on Dartmoor are likely to be evicted by bailiffs next week if they don't go beforehand.
The group of more than 100 people which call themselves the Rainbow Family of Living Light, have been staying by the River Dart for nearly a month.
They have large numbers of vehicles in the car parks and tents, teepees and fires.
The chief executive of Dartmoor National Park Authority, Kevin Bishop, said he was genuinely concerned about the impact the group was having on that site.

"They claim to be living [in a] environmentally friendly [way]. They aren't."
Mr Bishop said the authority had done everything it could to get into a position so that it could be forceful in terms of eviction.
"We have had to follow due legal process," he said. "Unlike them we are bound by the law."

All I see are tents and tepee's.
Please read the quote, “ they have large numbers of vehicles......”. On the tv the car park was full of cars and converted vans as well as camper vans. How do you think they got there?

I have been a member of this group for a fair time, I joined it to promote and assist the legal aspects of wild camping using campervans In order to get general acceptance of the freedom to camp responsibly. The actions reported run directly against what I thought this group stood for.

Not read the whole thread, just picked up your link in post #39. I take it you have distanced yourself from them now?

Do not touch the vegetation. That is vandalism and justifies many of the complaints about wild campers. You get us a bad name.
