Lyndon Top at Rutland Water

First camped there on a rally, about 25 yrs ago. Lakeland leisure owned it back then, so nothing new. As a sites officer for our camping group, I booked this venue, several times. I always dealt with Richard Bee, of Lakeland.

Yes, it's always been owned by Lakeland as far as I know, they are based in Cumbria (not surprisingly).

I remember a few years back, we had a rally booked at Rutland and the booking was all done through their main site in Cumbria. On the first evening of the meet one member 'phoned the organiser to see where we all were and yes, she had driven up to Cumbria instead of the few miles to Rutland!

Since Richard passed away and then Maddy left Lakeland took over the overall running of the site and that's where I think things went downhill and prices went up.

After spending 3 days at a garage in France having a repair. The french had done a poor job replacing a hose as it was in a very difficult place to get at and was now leaking. We discovered this as we stopped to book into the site. I asked Arthur if there was anywhere close to get it fixed properly. He just smiled and disappeared under the bonnet. The only problem was getting him to accept payment for his efforts.

We loved the open feel and the lovely views. However, returning from a walk one afternoon, someone had parked fairly close in front of us, despite the huge field being more-or-less empty.
I fired up the engine and parked in front of them! I don't think that they understood my message

You're lucky they hadn't chained their generator to your van 😊

Occasionally, he camped there himself, in his RV. There was only a groundsman around, on site. Don't remember any Arthur, or Maddy, at that time, indeed, when we once had a problem with the septic tank being full, I had to ring Richard Bee, to arrange for it to be emptied. Interestingly, the tanker driver told us that he would be spraying the contents on farmland, in Lincolnshire. That included all the toilet fluids, paper etc.
I recall that Phil once had a difference of opinion, either with Richard, or his son and wasn't happy to book this venue, in the future.
Only camped there, on our own, once, when we had to put our site fees in a "Honesty Box"
Richard was OK. I phoned him because the honesty box was full. He told me to push it down with a stick. The groundsman then wasn't full-time; he was a Scotsman with a wooden leg. I think his only job was to cut the grass.
If I remember correctly, I used a coat hanger to push the envelopes down, but when I pulled it out, a few envelopes came out with it. Unfortunately, it was just as someone else walked up to pay; I had a hard time convincing him, so I told him to phone Richard.
Arthur left his previous job because he didn't like how the farmer treated his sheep; he reported the farmer, knowing full well it would cost him his job.
He was living in a tent on the bottom sloping field nearest the lake because he also lost his tied house. We walked past, and he offered us a cup of tea. After a long chat and he told me his story, I told him Richard was looking for a full-time warden.
A few weeks later he had the job, a caravan on site and the place improved week after week. A lot of campers used to give him a bottle of wine; he never told them he didn't drink red wine; luckily, he knew a Yorkshireman who did.😂
I often wonder how the Lyndon Top would be now if he was still the warden
