Luxury car tax rip of

In 2017 the Tories started what’s called luxury car tax.
It’s applied to any car with a LIST PRICE of more than £40,000.
EVs were exempt up until April this year, but now they are included.
The current rate for the first five years is £425 plus the normal car tax.
Most cars would be charged at £425 plus £190 that’s £615 for the first five years, after this the normal rate is applied.

This figure of £40,000 has never been raised and today many cars that were originally exempt are now taxed this way. Most EVs are over £40,000, the current average price being £46,000, so how can a car £6000 below the average be luxury. Also it does not matter what you pay for your car. If you buy a pre registered car for less than £40,000 or haggle below £40,000 you still pay this luxury tax because it’s based in the list price.

Personally I think it should be abolished, but if that’s not going to happen at least the figure should rise with inflation. If it had risen since 2017 it would currently be £53,000. Fortunately this tax does not apply to motorhomes.

When buying a car with a list price of more than £40,000 beware, as your friendly car salesperson is unlikely to highlight it.

My Volvo V90 has just dropped from £520.00 to approx £250.00 ish.
A rip off but I wouldn’t let £300.00 extra a year for 5 years on road tax put me off buying a car.

Neither would I but that’s not the point.
How can a car £6000 below the average price be classed as luxury in the case of an EV.
And surely this figure should have been raised since it was introduced way back in 2017.
And some people buying these cars are not made aware of this until their road tax renewal comes a year later, that’s what happened to a friend of mine who purchased a Volvo.
And it’s not £300 it’s £425 plus the normal road tax. So most cars are £190 plus £425 that’s £615. They’ve increased the amount ok, but not the threshold.

Anyone paying that sort of dosh for a car requires there head tested big time, last car cost me £10 and went for 15 years, this one i drive now cost £1900 and still has not paid for its self after 8 years. :( 😂
We had a one year old Vauxhall Corsa as a Courtesy car recently. After us both driving it we decided to keep our old (2014) Skoda Roomster. They are just crap these days, unless you spend a fortune.

Not raising thresholds in line with inflation is a well established governmental (what ever colour) way of getting more revenue "without increasing taxes" !
