LEZ zones (specifically Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead)

So for now I can safely take the camper into the Newcastle CAZ and no charges 👍 👌

At least until they shift the goalposts at some future point... 🤷‍♀️

“The exemption application has been successful

The reason for this is :

Your application has been approved, you now have a permanent exemption from Newcastle Clean Air Zone.

If you have any further enquiries regarding your application please contact Tyneside Clean Air Zone Team via email caz.exemptions@newcastle.gov.uk or by telephone on 0191278271.”

That's the weirdest 'exclusion zone' that I have heard of Marie. Seems like nobody is actually excluded as long as you apply. :ROFLMAO:

Yup. But it’s there in black and white. 🤷‍♀️

Whatever, the camper is now registered to be excluded from paying any fees (that’s if their system works from 12th July!)

There will be a temporary exemption for light goods vehicles (vans), which will not be required to pay Clean Air Zone charges until July 2023, as part of a phased introduction of the zone.”

I think that means you're banned Marie! :)

As someone who travels to the Newcastle area regularly I'd suggest ... Just avoid it. Park outside and use the Metro if you want to visit or stick to the A1/A698/A68 and keep on going...

Saying that, my van is exempt (Euro 6 engine with AdBlue) but trying to park there is a nightmare. I park outside and use the Metro when I need to travel in.

Even parking outside the center is a problem - North Tyneside council are a council of prevention of enjoyment. They'll fine you for parking overnight in their car parks and just about everywhere is permit parking (they have a dinky little car go round with a camera on-top doing ANPR to check) and stop you doing stuff they even mention on their website like canoeing in public lakes... Bah!

Liz can't go near Newcastle (a very long story) so we avoid it, we try not to go up the A1 near there if possible too.

Apparently Bristol collects £250,000 A DAY in LEZ fines. Now forgive me for being a bit cynical but doesn't that smack of empire building by councillors, promoting themselves and awarding themselves certificates for increasing their dominions, collecting more and more staff under their control and therefore gaining promotion and increased salaries? Maybe even to the dizzy heights of being able to afford a subsidised electric car that they can plug in free of cost (not to be confused with free of charge :) at County Hall? And of course give planning consent to demolish a camp site in town and the owners to sell the land to property developers. No brown envelopes there, of course. I speak of personal experience of brown envelopes passing to a planning officer. It wasn't me passing the brown envelope by the way.

The councillors in our village are above the law when it comes to their own planning permission at home and property development where they have a vested interest!

Birmingham CAZ is raking it in

It wouldn't occur to them to simply make it more difficult for vehicles, and easier for cyclists, would it? That would reduce emissions considerably, as is done in all countries across the channel. Including the Baltic countries which I have recently visited. What we should do is to find out which towns / cities these LEZ places are twinned with and send them photos showing how the Forriners reduce city emissions and suggest that we do the same instead of charging ordinary people extra ordinary prices . However, that would actually cost a few bob rather than make a few million so the idea would not be popular with the councils.

Thanks for that. Although I probably won't enter the Tyneside CAZ, I've just applied for my exemption. That said, I might be extracting the urine as my van is 2001 (so pre-Euro) and also over 3,500kg. I await their decision with interest! ...

You might struggle over 3.5 tonne, Geoff, as it will be classified as an HGV? (I think...).

If you're under 3.5 it's classified as a LGV (Light Goods Vehicle or "Van") by DVLA (and hence by Newcastle City and everywhere else), exemption only for LGV in Newcastle if you show them it is also registered as a Motor Caravan on the V5C.

Good luck though and let us know what the outcome is (y) 🤞

I wait with bated breath! ...

In the meantime, I'm going through the gov.uk list of CAZs to see whether other local exemptions are available. Fee reductions are available for Bath and Sheffield -- both free to apply. Bath is then £9/day instead of £100 and Sheffield £10/day instead of £50. No joy for Birmingham, Bristol, Bradford (unless you're local) or Portsmouth. TBH, Bradford is the one zone I wish I could get an exemption for purely because Bradford ring road would be my preferred route between the SW Midlands and my favourite pub stop!

Edited to add: For Sheffield, I needed to create an account to then use to pay the discounted fee. It seems that I'll need to pay the discounted fee and also upload scans of my V5C together with photos of the front, back, sides and inside of the van each time I want to transit the CAZ.

Well I got part of it right anyhoo :D

But unsure why you would go via Bradford though.

Not a criticism, just trying to find a good route for you.

Thanks for the thread. Applied for exemption in newcastle and it was approved in 24 hours. Van is 2007 renault master 6 metres. You upload v5 and photo of van.
Occasionally travel into newcastle carrying band equipment so helpful to have exemption. Cheers stu

Thanks Kev. The reason why Bradford is that I don't like motorways. Don't get me wrong, motorways are great if you want to get somewhere in a hurry, but I prefer scenic routes when time permits -- so my preferred route is Pannal, Yeadon, Bradford, Huddersfield and then South through the Peak District. With Bradford ring road involving a £50 toll, I've either got to thread my way between Leeds and Bradford, go North of Bradford (e.g. Skipton, Keighly, Halifax), or use the motorways as you suggest. It's financially less risky to take the motorways, so it was a boring day from Harrogate to Kidderminster on the way back home a few weeks ago!

Right, I see, I can get you from Yeadon to Cleckhuddersfax easily enough.

Check this route out.
