Is Europe available to us again

Then, of course, there is the question of who you should be helping financially. Do you want to see good British folk benefit from your hard earned cash or Johnny Foreigner?

16 million infection 1 million within the last 4 days the virus is still very active. It seems apparent to me the relaxing of lockdown as expected is creating second spikes of infection in some localities ...foreign travel seems a risk in that governments seem to be changing policy with little warning the situation at present is simply to volatile

We are going to the French Alps Sunday. As at home we will follow all precautions. We plan to take a medical thermometer and oximeter. We run in the mountains and meet very few people up there and those at a good distance. Shopping there will if anything be better than here. We will minimise those occasions as we do here. If we got symptoms we have a son in Belgium who could shop for us and deliver to our camper parked near him. If that happens When free of symtoms we can get a ferry back.

People have completely lost the plot.
I was in a garage this morning to replace calor cylinder.
several customers, and the staff, and I was the only one wearing a mask, which drew looks.
Then I went to the local shop same again.
And I hate wearing them.

When will people get this into their heads, life is not normal, the past few months should have told them this.
If you are leading a normal life you are being selfish.

Second wave now looking a certainty, and I live in Scotland.
God only knows what's happening in England.

It's time for some to waken up and smell the coffee.
And the people who are behaving like this will no doubt make the loudest noise if we return to lockdown.

Who I help financially is surely those I consider give the best service or, sell the best products etc regardless of race.
Anyway half of my family are either Italian or American so its a bit tricky regarding the "Johnny foreigner" aspect.

Tell me does Johnny foreigner continue to be Johnny foreigner even when he migrates to the Uk ?
Or does he become a member of the "good British folk" fraternity when he starts working for the NHS ?

Derek what about the contact you will have on the ferry, and throughout your journey.
If your travel insurance was taken out since lockdown you are not covered for covid.
French figures are currently rising, Luxembourg's figures are the highest in Europe.
If the Government pull the plug whilst your away your insurance is completely null and void.
And you will have to lock down for two weeks on your return.
Hope you have a good holiday, but right now I would not consider leaving the UK.
Our Health, and the health of others is way too important.
The British Isles have much to offer.

Also on my recent travels I have not seen anyone from outside the UK, and normally up here there are plenty.

The ferry has phased boarding and disembarking procedures and much reduced passenger numbers to allow distancing. We intend to go from our car straight to the open deck wearing masks and stay there dressed for almost any weather . It is only 2 hours. I very much doubt the part of France we go to has a high figure, there is very little population. We do not, even usually, frequent refuges etc. If we do go through Luxembourg we will stop just once, just for fuel, and we may not.
We may have to lockdown on our return. There is no certainty. France is green we are amber. If we do we have friends who can shop for us.
I agree we are taking a risk. Thanks for your best wishes and concern. We will have to keep our ear to the ground and be flexible re how long and where we stay. We do not consider our risk to others or ourselves to be greater than our usual running( and shopping) in the Pennines. We will stay further away from key worker family members, so will probably be safer. It will be less boggy underfoot and more blue sky.

I feel I've upset you with my terminology for which I apologise, but does it change the sentiment. Our economy is in the doldrums. Our towns are on their knees so perhaps a little support would help rather than putting money into other country's economies.
I'm more worried about in which country the money is spent rather than where the people come from.
I suspect you were accusing me of being racist. As the grandson of a German Jew, who escaped the pogroms, I hardly think that is likely

Enjoy. All sounds very good and thought out.

I had planned to go away beginning of Aug, works changed that though, lets see how it goes end of month or Sept.

Will only go away if allowed, most important bit about that is vehicle insurance.

Not concerned about people on ferry, but usually use tunnel anyway. I come into contact with less people when away, so thats a bonus.

Not upset at all and not accusing you of anything.

I simply answered the comments in a logical and polite fashion.

Have a nice day.

Simply
  • Stay in UK AND be really careful
  • Your Health & safety
  • Doing your bit to prevent transmission
  • Common sense (which seems in remarkably short supply of late)
Mass travel is the biggest cause of the virus spreading.

As an aside I am in dispute with my travel insurance for complying with FO or FCO directives
Specifically on 17th March
1 Today the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all non-essential international travel, initially for a period of 30 days. This advice takes effect immediately.

2 We are not currently advising British people to immediately return to the UK if they are overseas, except for a few countries detailed in our travel advice.

We have complied with both
YET a minor claim has been refused....
We were due to travel on 18th March and duly (correctly) chose not to travel (back to UK) !
I have a complaint in and will go to the Ombudsman
It appears insurance companies (mine) interpreted the statement as "do not leave the UK"
I have offered them a dictionary !..WE shal see

But that is trivial compared with
  • Lives lost
  • Families devastated
  • Serious illness
The virus is here and will remain !

Please engage brain before travelling !
We in our Motorhomes like Boris are NOT IMMUNE !

Working on the theory the Covid virus is less effective in warmer climates it makes sense to stay wherever it warmest. Everyone off to Morocco? 🤪😂

Hmm. I heard a report on the radio the other day which claimed that recent studies into the virus seem to have discovered it hangs around longer in hot, dry air, not so much in humid air. Other studies claim it does not survive above 25 degrees C. So who's right?

Sounded a bit weird to me, but then the virus appears to be 'weird'.

You really don't know who's opinion to trust on this. Just have to make your own mind up and use plenty of common sense, common sense and even more common sense. We're all of us, including the experts, drifting around in the same boat, all kinda lost at sea! ;)

I always have a good day. It's others that seem to have a bad one.

Clearly you are right motorhome occupation does not make you immune, but the neither does staying at home self isolating.
I do not think that travel has a great risk, especially if it is just the person I have been isolating with since March who is the only one travelling with me. It is what you do when you stop and even more what you do when you get there that is the risk that must be assessed.
We do not intend a boozy break in Ibiza, in fact the direct opposite! Common sense must be applied. That means a scientific risk assesment of all actions and avoiding all risky ones. That is accounting for our risk and the risk to those we pass. I do not see that what we intend is against common sense. The risks are mostly of falling foul of changing regulations. We must pay attention to trends. We may come unstuck, we hope not.

Your points are well made but....The dreaded DC argued well about his trip to Durham.
NOT suggesting you are as arrogant or stupid as he is/was and this have changed since then but....Simpy more travel = more risk
You are correct in suggesting your actions are very low risk..your choice to do as you think (I do not offer that condescendingly)

Having read this on another thread, it would appear ‘the good British folk’ do not want support in these difficult times. I might understand his concerns if this was an ‘ordinary’ year, although the tourist authorities created this problem of resource not matching demand. To raise this at a time of crisis is plain stupid.

I shall be quite happy to spend my money in ‘Johnny Foreigner’s’ land, any way if I stay at home wrapped in cotton wool I shall not be spending in the Uk economy, so France will get my money this year or a bonus payment next year if we decide to stay home now.

Carry the attitude of that MP. Across to Wales, Cornwall and the various other enclaves that seem to be springing up in this ‘United Kingdom’ and lets see what happens next year. Never say never but I suspect they do not help themselves and people will not be so generous in future.

we have binned our annual trip to France and Spain this September.. I amended the holiday with Brittany Ferries to same time next year 2021 (hopefully by then this absolute over-reacted nonsense to the covid flu will have died out)
main reason for not going being = not really bothered about quarantine at home for 2 weeks.. I work from home.. real reason is I don't want to go on holiday seeing people muzzled-up in silly horrible blue surgical masks hooked over their ears everywhere.. YUK.. HORRIBLE
Its bad enough seeing them everywhere here in the UK!
It would ruin our holiday big time. I want to have a nice holiday and not feel like I was in a hospital ward where everyone is considered to have the bubonic plague
.. Mrs ZZR agrees .. and she is a senior sister in a hospital
Happy 2020 .. NOT

Why do people think their holiday is more important than theirs or other people’s health. Covid has not gone away! We are getting it under some form of control and it takes everybody help to do this.

I think the word you are looking for is selfishness.Yes those who have now rushed out to Spain (and are moaning like Fcuk because of the 14 day quarantine on return)and anyone YES anyone considering travel to foreign climes in this present Pandemic are being selfish only thinking of themselves. Why cant they wait for a while until for sure things are better.?

I do not think think any holiday is more important than somebodies health that is why I am strictly following
government guidelines and will continue to follow whatever guidelines are in place abroad, should I get there.

I do not presume to know more than the health experts who set said guidelines, so I follow their advice.

If you do not accept what the guidelines are and wish to impose your own stricter ones, then that is your choice.

Current government guidelines on international travel is here.

You will be pleased to see that France is exempt and its OK to visit.

France is exempt FOR NOW things can change in a heartbeat.
