Is a Mac better than a pc.

Good news, I bet you will be out as soon as you can :)

No flux capacitors but some dodgey c compiler from the 1980's that requires a string of parameters that know one understands anymore.

Yeah you think we would have been straight out but oh no. Mrs D has stuff to do, there is a wedding to go to, flipping quotes and proposals to do and a possible April trip to France which some one will no doubt scupper.

I was around in the 80's as a juinor programmer. Probably cant remember much and can only just remember the 4 Cobol divisions, some BASIC and a few other 4GL's and C wasnt one of my strong languages. Still Im available for consultancy if your struggling. £1500 a day plus exes to you my SAN!

Actually if you do need help I bet there are loads of 80's gurus on the MH forums as most of them have been around a while! Just do a search for IT Codgers.

Cheers

Hi, I Don’t know how far back you two wish to go on the computer system chat, but when Madam got her maths degree from Warwick University in the early 70s she did it by extrapolating the data required on a computer the size of a car using the punch card system. Any anorak will tell you that even now, the default size for character interfaces such as the command prompt in Windows still remains set at 80 columns, and this comes from the punch card.

Me fight? Never. Just a strange sense of humour which I thought would be fitting on here.

I agree. NOT discussing computers is a good idea. I dont know what Im talking about anyway and somehow have blagged my way through a 21 year career without being found out or killing anyone (I stay away from hospital systems etc).

We are due at a wedding in Oxford on the 3rd and then plan with any luck to go to France but will be heading south quickly to try and catch some nice weather if possible. will probably be at Marine Parade on the 4th or 5th. As usual no confirmed plans yet.

Yep same here nothing defo yet depends on the weather but the dates are about the same, not sure on staying in Dover the night yet, might just go straight into France and stay up the coast here the first night, just seems better wake up in France and not on the quay in the Uk :)

Yes I know what you mean but at the same time I quite enjoyed the early ferry last summer and still setting off into France in the late morning. Although I am a bit wary of stopping on Marine Parade if its Sunday as this is still easter and it maybe noisy. Ferry crossing Easter Monday 8:30am is only £37 though and £47 the day after. I had Best book something soon though as doesnt it go up if you leave it till the last minute?

Well £10 is nice to have but not that much compared to being able to arrive late on Friday afternoon and just getting on the first ferry available :) if we book you can bet yoyur life it will be pissing down on the day we want to travel. were not booked into the CS until tuesday so we are just going to play it by ear. Norfolk line have some £17 deals at stupid oclock in the morning if you can be up at 5 they might be just the job for you :)

You trying to say im tight!!! how did I give that impression?????

Think I will just play it by ear and book nearer the time. Not book a return though as I dont know when (if) im coming back.

Really P$ssed off now. Just been out to clean the van and noticed there are 3 chips on the top left quarter at the rear in the gel coat. Looks like the garage have pranged it when its been inside. Cant see how it could have happened otherwise as its 10 ft off the ground and I certainly never hit anything over Christmas. Called them and they dont recall it being bashed but its going in tomorrow to be looked at. Just posted them a cheque this afternoon for £2660 an all!!!

Bugger.

When I get to that stage I start again - format the hard drive, reinstall Windows and hopefully have a (nearly) good-as-new system again.

so, when's the wedding?

4 years ago is near pre-historic is video-editing terms and possibly pre-dates HD. My 'puter is of a similar vintage (Pentium dual-coare 3.4 GHz, 4GB RAM, Radeon 4600 with 1GB RAM) but has always struggled with video - I'm currently putting together a charity fundraising DVD and it's creaking and stuttering along painfully.

I'm interested in the spec of yours (control panel - system...) as you say it's fast when it's working (if it's working).

Try and get another copy of the O/S, might be that your copy has a glitch in it.

Hi ya Roo
Have a look at this post from earlier I posted some trick to optomise for video editing, your machine sounds plenty powerful enough for basic editing.

I read that with interest. The problem is, I'm doing music (of sorts - some imagination is needed here...) videos with up to 5 video tracks, 1 or 2 effect tracks and 1 music track (mixed separately from up to 8 tracks then imported into the video program). Although the videos are only 2-3 minutes long, it isn't possible to split the chunks down any further because the various tracks overlap and interweave. The rendering itself is OK but the 'puter creaks and groans through the compilation stage. Wth some packages I can't even view a preview screen and I'm editing with a ... plastic ruler in fractions of milimeters!!

AJ - I think you probably have a higher-spec set-up than mine and presumably a 64-bit system. As you seem to have replaced all/most of your hardware (and drivers?), have you tried loading a different version of Windows? Or even just from a different installation disk. Something sounds corrupt somewhere...

Ebay or repair!

I have for the last few years bought three or four computers from Ebay dealers, high end spec for gaming, excellant quality for a couple of hundred quid, basic unit. I upgrade every year, only had problems of blue screen was from AMD chip or hard disk fault. I have never had a pentium chip go faulty unless it was due to motherboard or fan fault. If you have wasted so much funds on new parts, why not simply invest in a high spec system for pennies in real terms!
