Ireland visit - internet & mobile phone connectivity

Yeah, I've done all that malarkey a few years ago, and I'm even more loath to do it in the current climate of experimental AI and the inability to talk to a real human to get stuff sorted when the chips go down and there's a cock up. I'm rapidly turning from a one-time tech lover into an old, irritated, p*ss*d off luddite these last few years! 😜🥴;)

My current phone set up works fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it - and I've had one too many bad experiences in the past with this sort of thing, especially when you enter into the ether and then have to rely on third parties to respond and actually do their jobs properly.

The e-sim route is sounding quite attractive...

TBF I probably won't need internet access all that much, but my ulterior motive is that I'm really wanting to go over to Europe this next winter/2026, so Ireland is more a kind of trial run? (for determining all sorts of longer-term camper living stuff, not just Internet) 🤷‍♀️
Porting has become much, much quicker and easier in the last year or two. OFCOM waved a big stick at the networks and told them to sort it out.

Well I hope you enjoy your Ireland trip, Although look out for my mates the ‘Zombie Spider’ (Well the Fungus really) that wanders around small areas of the Emerald Isle like Fermangar ish 👍😊

Enjoy

Whatever you do don't ask an Irishman for directions Marie.

We were as mentioned on our last trip there, in need of 6kg Calor and none to be found, so we stopped at a newsagents and asked in there, but they didn't know of anywhere, anyway, we were parked outside and I asked this kindly old gent if he knew of anywhere and he said there was a marine engineers nearby who sold gas but didn't know if it was Calor or not, so I asked him where it was so he gave me some unpronounceable name, so I asked him how to get there, and I swear to god he said "I wouldn't go from here" oh how we laughed, but he did direct us it was only a mile or so away and they did have 6kg Calor.

Stopped at the back of dublin airport when lost many years back, a old chap was leaning on garden wall, i opened car window and ask which was the best route to Belfast, he scratched his chin and pointed to the railway track behind his house and said follow then tracks for belfast, i kid you not.

Btw calor gas almost impossible to find in the south

Hmm. Thanks for that, it's very useful info! (y)

Off grid in the van all cooking, heating and the fridge is powered by gas, so will need to work out if I'll have enough to last... sure I will, as not going for several months, just a month (or 6 weeks) and 1 week of that will be spent in a house... can always eat out to save on van cooking... 🤔 🤷‍♀️
