Insurance renewals a joke

Hi my wellhouse leisure converted transit custom is now 2yrs old with 21,750 miles on the clock and just had my insurance renewal from the camping caravan club brokers £411.04 no claims and last year's premium was £377 so phoned asking why and if they could better the offer, and they could only reduce my excess from £400 to £200 so I spent the next 3 to 4 hours trawling the net for quotes, and was shocked at some of the prices quoted ,the worst been from saga just over £1200. first call to ABI £648 the nearest I could get to my quote was over £500.for the self same cover, restricted mileage of 10,000 to 15,000 now one company 2gether was £338 but only 3,000 miles needless to say I bit the bullet and renewed with the camping and caravan club the reasons given for the high prices quoted were the cost of the van to insure and the high mileage wanted .surely that sort of mileage isn't excessive as I have a car and two motorbikes its not my only form of transport and these low mileage quotes are stupid as a trip from my home to France and back would easily eat half of the mileage set in that one trip .i think this insurance is a con how can they justify such a raging price band from one broker to another.any thoughts on the matter is it age related? or what

The increase is around 9%, is not too bad a hike up for an insurance co. that's presuming you were on maximum NCD last year and this.
I've heard of far greater increases, almost routine for some companies, we all know they're trying it on, usually
a phone call can get the renewal premium knocked down.
For a motorhome a 10,000/15000 annual mileage is considered quite high, look at the ads for motorhomes
and you'll see how low the average mileage works out. My MOT guy reckons my 7000 just about hits
a high point, he gets some vans in where the owners only get out odd weekends and head for the nearest
campsite, < 2000 per year.

I expect we've all been thru this at some time or other I do every year. But the low mileage quotes aren't a joke a lot of people buy motorhomes and do less than 3000 a year just look at some in dealers forecourts. Mine at 3 yrs old had only 7000 on the clock. Try Safeguard they offer unlimited mileage policys

I have been driving for 40 years and at one point my car insurance was as little as £100

Now I am extremely lucky to get insurance at £250

Same address and no convictions.

Considering on these very hallowed pages the number of Transits and transit customs stolen, this could account for the hike in premium ? They are perhaps becoming a bit of a " Jonah" for the insurers if they have been paying out more than anticipated claims. Of course there is the try it on factor too perhaps.

So is it not about time the insurance companies get on the back of Fomoco Andrew ,I've been in the trade thirty odd years as you have been also, we know the big boys don't give a hoot to forums etc but might just listen to ins groups if they said that they're hiking up ford policy's unless action is taken ?

Motorhome, car, house they are all the same. Good price first year then they try it on at the first renewal.
Just sorted out my house insurance renewal with Admiral. Last year as a new customer £195.00, this included expensive photography kit and an expensive Omega watch.
Renewal arrived last week @ £295.00. As usual went online and managed to get quotes around the £160.00 - £210.00 region.
Called Admiral and to cut a long story short managed to get them down to £175.00 after they tweeked my excess and lol gave me a loyalty reduction.
No doubt I will go through the same scenario with my pvc insurance August.

In my experience manufacturers are not interested in existing owners, or listening to anybody including dealer councils , they just want to shift metal from the production lines.

Of course this adversity with the current transit and its derivatives you would think plans are afoot to address security shortcomings as demand could be affected for which they have a vested interest.

Ford particularly don't have a good history in my book. I was active when anything with an XR badge suddenly became expensive to insure along with Scorpios. The factorys answer to give big trading bonuses to dealers eg £3500 off a Scorpio.....XR's 2-3 k discounts. Everyone thought it was great FOrd had covered the insurance hikes using money.

Well they had financially, However the existing owners who owned their product all of a sudden found their insurances hiked and their cars worth less not only as a result of that but also the knock on effect of reductions in the price of new vehicles. A double whammy.

Ford at one stage were major shareholders in Zurich insurance be interesting to see how they see Ford product nowadays. Citroen did a similar thing with Direct line subsidising insurance on new cars. DL and Zurich of course loved the idea because it increased customer base to sell more profitable products.

Am I cynical ? I think I might just be a tad

Seconded  i`ve tried several of the other insurance companies but always end up going back to Safeguard.

The mileage has steadily crept up over the years and we now do 9 - 10,000 miles a year in the motorhome, not a problem with Safeguard

IPT went up to 10% in October 2016, having been 6% prior to the 2015 budget. No VAT on insurance, so you are stung by other means. This is for 'vans and cars'. However there is a higher rate of 20%, but a bit vague on which type of vehicle attracts this even bigger rip off. May be interesting to find out, as my motorhome went up from £290 to £321. Interestingly, flat rate for IPT in most of Europe is 19%

Just had my van insurance from safeguard come in.

Its a 6m Murvi Morello 11 months old, but this years fully comp insurance is £493.89.

I can feel the palpitations coming on already.

Dezi :mad2:

I have a swift Voyager 695EL just over 7m long 10,000 mile limit I only pay £224 the renewal was £304 a simple call to them and down it comes I have always used Advance to get me my insurance on my motorhome and my work truck they are a brokers so that will also have their fee involved some of the premiums I have seen in this thread would make me need a sit down and a stiff drink . :D

Nowt new, same each year.

I went through the same merry go round. I am with Shield Total Insurance. Each year some goes on but this year it went up from £386.67 to £452.67 and that is with full NCB. It also includes full breakdown cover including Europe. It is also limited mileage of 10.000. I was straight on the phone asking why such a big increase. They said because I had gone a year over being 75, also more tax had been levied on them by the government. I asked how can I get it down. They said drop your mileage to 3.000 and a few more bits and pieces, but it was still over £400. I then started to phone round and was very shocked at some quotes. I phoned Nigel at AIB and though he did try hard even asking for time to go through it all and ring me back which he did. He could only quote me £767.68 without any breakdown cover. I then tried a few more with similar results. I am also a member of the Motor Caravanners club which have loads of companies in there books looking after motor homers. Some quotes on there books was over a thousand pounds for the same insurance and nothing as near as my Shield £452.67 quote. I then high tailed it back to accept the latest quote before it went up which they do all of a sudden as if they know you are getting quotes that don't get close to there's. I dread passing 80 if I get that far has I can see it being impossible to get any insurance. My van is a Rimor Super Brig. I think it is 7.5 M on a ford 2.4 ford base.
.... Tom ....

There is no loyalty to customers from Insurers, Partly how the system works,

Each insurer has a "book" and like a bookmaker on the rails at a racecourse will attract premium so the books balance giving a spread of risk,

If for example a boat load of 70 year old pluses, they will dissuade offering higher premium , and offer lower premiums to younger drivers to even things out, Occupations are another good example along with postcodes of where the vehicle is kept , they will spread the risk, Using historical information re claims.

In theory this shouldn't matter to a broker who offers a selection of insurers but can only offer insurers that they deal with sounds obvious but needs to be stated to customers for example on cars ESURE and direct Line don't have brokers so sdown to the customer to shop about... fees broker to broker do vary so still worth shopping about.
