I have just renewed my van insurance with Comfort, the premium was £386 , but I wanted to add my stepson to the policy so that he could recover the van should I be unable to drive for any reason. The addition was no extra charge, until I told them he had an attempted break into his work van which was a claim. This made him unable to be added because of his claim record. This would need an additional payment to £551.64. Because he was now an unacceptable risk.
He is a 52 year old Fireman/driver with no previous claims or convictions at all since he started driving. I asked why he should be a bad risk and was told because attempted theft claims are a very serious claim, worse than collision.
What a load of bollocks, he would be driving my van and only if I needed help so where is the bad claim risk involved? Had I not mentioned it , then it would have flagged as a fraudulent claim?????????? The cartel strikes again? I had to drop him off the insurance.

Unfortunately in this world it seems that it is always the victims of crime who get penalised.

Somebody cleared my granddaughters bank account of £600. This was proven and she had no choice but to admit it. The police gave her a caution and my granddaughter never got a penny back. Because the girl admitted the crime, Social Services gifted her horse riding lessons for being so honest!

Yes !
Axa in Thailand refused my medical claim suggesting it was a known problem. This is not true.
Also there was no opportunity anyway to declare any condition.
I have had issues with Axa before.
But they offerred 4 months cover which was cheaper than the 6 months offerred elsewhere As part of the Thai Pass entry/health protocol.

Comfort have been fair with me.
Just last year paying out for my rooflite repair which took 3 years to organise. On receipt of the quote they transferred some £400 to my bank in advance of the work being done.
The insurers being Aviva

All my recent insurance providers allowed any driver to take over in the event of me being unable to drive. It used to be SAGA (who would allow under 55y olds in this instance) and now it is Think Insurance.

The trouble is that insurance ‘risk’ is not personalised. It’s based on statistics. So the stats say that someone who has had an attempted break in is more likely to have another than someone who has never had one. Statistically that may be true, but it does not account for individual circumstances.

The same if you have a collision. For example, someone ran into the back of my car (lowish speed). They admitted full liability, they paid up in full. But my premium increased for the next 5 years as my ‘risk’ had increased. Same reasoning as above.

It’s a rum do but there’s no way around it, although still worth shopping around and asking the question.

the irony of the O P is that i took jan of our insurance precisely because that poor woman in holland at the flower festival was told she couldn’t be recovered because she was down on the insurance as a named driver, ( husband had come of his bike & broke his hip) the insurance said that the premium would increase because of that ??

I am the only driver insured for my Motorhome for that reason. The OH is legally licensed to drive it, so if she was also covered, and I was incapacitated and needed recovery, she would be expected to drive it instead despite having no experience or knowledge how to (and probably create another claim in the process if she tried!).

Comfort insurance were fair with me too. They added my 38 yr old son onto my van policy at no cost despite a recent claim on his insurance by his wife who pranged his car. I declared it and expected to get hammered. But luckily it fell outside their definition of extra risk. As someone said upthread, it's not personal, it's just the application of statistical models of risk. How could they exist otherwise?

New to motorhoming but an experienced caravaner for over 50 years with max ncb on 2 motor policies, tried to get insurance at age 81 With a coach driver daughter as second driver. Ooops. Through brokers only one offered cover of over £1500 but SAGA covered me for something over £850. Legally I could not not then (I was informed by insurance broker SAGA) change the main driver to be my daughter to hopefully get a lower quote. Another scam to be aware of.

It works both ways. Our Grandson put myself and my Wife as named drivers and his premium was reduced by a huge amount.
And if he had a bump you wont be getting cheap ins for many years, that's if you can get any.
Many here think once a car is insured at home for any driver it becomes a free for all until the son has a crash or is stopped by the feds and then finds out they have to be over 25 and have their own car ins to drive the family car third party cover only.

To be brutally frank, who is trying to scam whom if you are changing the main driver to another person to get a lower quote, and not because the actual main driver is changing?

I think this is a bad decision and as an ex underwriter of 40 years experience do not understand it. I woul put in a written complaint and ask for a written explanation initially to comfort and if this dies not get a better result then also to the actual insurers . (I think comfort are brokers not underwriters?) If that fails the ombudsman may be able to help.

I was just wondering with the 15% discount how many were insured with AIB? any feed back on them? I'm due for renewal in two days.

I have been a couple of times. I shop around every year so tends to vary (I cannot actually remember who I am currently insured with!)

Just checked (always good to know who you are insured with!!) and it is currently with AIB :) I recall now the call I had with the guy from AIB when looking for quotes and found him very good to deal with.

I'm with CSMA so I already get recovery and legal, do they do a policy without, obs I could ring them but none of them are willing to part with info without inside leg measurements etc, and they don't seem to come up on comparison site.
