Ian Blackford demands motorhome code of conduct after NC500 crashes

Road length by country

Of the 247,800 miles of road in Great Britain in 2021:

  • 190,000 miles (77%) of road were in England
  • 36,800 miles (15%) were in Scotland
  • 21,000 miles (8%) were in Wales
  • No wonder there appear to be more passing places in Scotland.🤪

Population of Scotland approx. 5.52 million.

Population of England approx. 56.5 million.

Approx. 278 people per square kilometre in England (excluding Wales).

Approx. 70 people per square kilometre in Scotland.

Or thereabouts, give or take...

Obviously the biggest concentration will be in the major cities and their conurbations, but when those folks decide to vacate their premises and go on holiday...😵‍💫😂

🤷‍♀️ ;)

Personally I'm finding Outer Mongolia more and more appealing.... ;):ROFLMAO:

Move to Teesdale or Richmondshire where I live Marie. Second least population per square km in England. 30+, only beaten by Eden in Cumbria next door.

I find it strange that planning permission is ever granted for some caravan sites though, vehicles towing caravans can cause chaos for the locals (especially farmers) who live on and around the narrow country lanes and it creates a lot of animosity towards visitors.
Planning permission is automatically granted for almost any application with certain exceptions, so planning for a campsite starts with an automatic pass.

Then objections get taken into consideration, when Mr Jones up the road objects he has to have a good reason (just not liking caravans isn’t a good reason) so at some point the question of access for any development becomes a question.

If the public roads leading to the proposed development have existing restrictions that would effect the development then it’s likely that the development will be refused.

If no such restriction already exists, it’s very unlikely that any objection would be upheld due to access, but the campsite in this case may have its capacity reduced to save overloading the local infrastructure, the main reason for this is to stop the local authorities from having to improve the roads later at their own cost to relieve new congestion caused by the development.

So in effect if the country lane with or without passing places doesn’t have restrictions on vehicle length/height/weight etc then the planning application simply can’t turn down the application based on access.

By the way, I’m with Mr Jones regarding caravans.

When I was a child living in Scotland I can remember people in UK reg cars pulling to the other side of the road to use passing places.
We now live in a rural area on the Englad/Wales border where most roads are single-track. Passing places are peoples drives (like ours), field gateways, anywhere the road isn't edged by a stone wall or ditch. The biggest things on our lanes are tractors and stock lorries. Some of our tractors are antique Little Fergies and some are huuuuge modern ones, the newer ones are usually driven fast, by guys who always have a mobile glued to one ear. These and tourist are the backbone of the local economy.

The media may be trying to make motorhomes the main issue, the actual interview didn't
Yes, the media do love to kick up a storm about something or other using what could sometimes be called hate speach. Campervans and motorhomes are to blame for every problem everywhere at present, and the hate speach is building.
I always write to the publication and complain about lack of balance, untrue and unfair reports. I have never received a reply.

As I mentioned earlier that can be turned around . Journalists are desperate for any stories to fill space

Two fb groups - The Land Weeps and The Dirty Truth - keep posting anti MH stuff. They blame us for all the mess left by tent campers and car drivers. The degree of venom towards MH visitors to the Highlands is unrelenting. The local press pick up on these posts and repeat the unfounded rubbish.
I’m a member on The Land Weeps and The Dirty Truth and I fully agree with you on that, I posted a reply when someone said that it was tents and cars even a marquee and blow up settees but a few mentioned MH’s saying that we should all be made to use sites! I did put them right on that score...
