Hey there,
I'm back in blighty. Got back on Sunday. I will be uploading our adventure to my blog in the next couple of days but for those thinking of going to Southern Ireland just to say , we had no issues at all. The people themselves seem a little confused about what they can and cannot do and a couple of people told us that they were not allowed to travel to England yet! As in Northern Ireland and over here, most people are not wearing masks and just going about their day to day lives with a little SD-ing. They become a bit more insistent on mask-wearing and temperature taking along the extremities of the peninsulas in the SW but it's really not a problem and is only whilst you are in their shop or tourist info centre.
We came back with Irish Ferries - they were not as concerned with mask wearing as Stena Line had been going.
We saw several 'Garda' including two that parked up just a few spaces away from us, but were not remotely interested in us. Like us, it seemed they were parking there to look at some fabulous view.
There are quite a few motorhomes / campers now moving along that West Atlantic Way - there was a distinct lack of English number plates but we weren't the only ones there. Plus, we heard no Americans (last year we had heard loads as they appear to go to Southern ireland to research their ancestry). As such, places like Blarney Castle were very very easy and we were able to go and kiss the Blarney stone immediately with no queueing thereby making this an ideal time to visit Ireland.
TOP TIP - Go to Lough Hine and stay there at night (though it was the only place we stayed that did have a no overnight camping sign there) - you will see bioluminescent algae glittering in there at night - amazing! It reminded me of Rutger Hauers statement in Bladerunner 'I've watched sea beams glitter in the dark at Tannhauser gate' (though I have subsequently heard that it is mean to be C-beams and referring to a type of starship weapon). Anyway, I digress - The parking there is very busy as they do night kayaking due to this algae. If concerned about the sign, there is a really nice spot a couple of km away suitable for campers and small motorhomes - pm me if you want the info.
I have once again been left with that warm fuzzy feeling that you get when you encounter the welcoming nature of Irelands people. On the last night, someone came up to us on the Bulls Head causeway in Dublin to let us know that sometimes boy racers zoom there cars up and down there at night and they invited us to go and park outside their house and use their bathroom!! We didn't though, as like many , the SD-thing still makes things feel a little awkward as one is never quite sure how someone else may feel about it. Plus, we were positively tramp-like by that point and Daenerys was rather 'fragrant' with the smell of several bags of dirty washing and damp wetsuits! lol
We found some fabulous WC places we hadn't stayed before - my top spots from this year are at Lough Noofey and near Puxley Mansion (Beara peninsula and where the brave can go urban exploring!).
Anyway, I will write it all up in a bit more detail at
https://daenerysvan.tumblr.com/ in the next few days if anyone wants ideas etc just get in touch.
I would seriously love to move to Ireland and open a campsite up somewhere on that Atlantic way.
Thanks again to Trev!
Our second tour-de force of over 1500 miles nearly all the way around Ireland in my 30 year old T4, Daenerys - DONE!
