How many miles is too many miles...

Having driven from Edinburgh to Rome though the back roads of Belgium, France and Italy in a £500 banger charity rally the past 2 years – we are embarking this year on a more relaxed trip to the South of France in our newly obtained Campervan (very excited to say the least).

We leave Edinburgh in early August and our route is basically:

Edinburgh > Portsmouth > Tours (Loire Valley) > Agde (French Rivera) > Avigon (Rhone Valley – added after watching the Tour de France) > Annecy > Disney Land Paris > Paris > Dieppe > New Haven > Edinburgh

Total miles 2398 over 18 days.

Everyone keeps saying we are mad – I don’t see any problem with it. We are both young (30 & 25) and want to see as much as possible.

Anyone else planning to do big miles this summer?

Hi, we do two longish tours each year, and one of them is usually to Italy.

Each trip we try to do a different route & possibly take in a different Country on the way out or way back.

Our average mileage per trip is around 1,500 / 2,000.

14 days around Islay & back to the Midlands this year was 1,400 miles at a very relaxed pace. I don't think we ever exceeded 150 miles/day & many days were under 50. Decide where you want to focus your time. 2-300 miles a day is OK for motorways etc to get somewhere, but a regular break of a few days of low mileage, low speed pottering & proper sighteseeing will help you stay sane.

If you find it's getting you down, or one of your "on the way" stops turns out to be too good to cut short, simply change your plan. That's what plans are for. It only becomes a problem if you are struggling to keep up the pace & refuse to cut back on your target. You are young & can always come back again next year to complete a bit you decided to skip or never actually reached.

Great advice Smaug...

We have went from having no plan to a very VERY detailed one - but not planning to stick strictly to it if things change along the way..

I know the Loire Valley will be good (was there when I was young but didn’t really appreciate it) and the Rhone Valley looks epic – bit unsure about the Rivera but need to incorporate some beach into our summer trip..

I am self employed and get 3 weeks holiday a year so need to make sure where we go is nice..

Will be sure to keep the miles down – I drove from the Italian/Swizz border to London in 1 day 2 years ago – will certainly not be doing anything like that this trip considering our transport will also be our home

Love Italy Dezi. Have you ever been to Assisi in Northern Italy. Its really nice. We stopped of there for the night before Sienna, which I also thought was really nice. I know its cliché but the Pizzas are the thing I miss most about Italy, Yum lol

For the last 3 years I havn't planned any route whatsoever other than turning right at Calais, last year we drove nearly 3300 miles total, and this year drove approx 2500 total. both in 3 weeks holiday, I look in the aires book and if I fancy a place I just set my satnav with no motorways and no tolls. We have found some beautiful places down the south west coast of France. We're more than double your age and if work didn't get in the way we'd do more miles:drive:.
By the way have a good holiday.

John.

as old farts we went like the wind round france 2800 miles but i like driving and we don't do motorways so the view through the windscreen is usually pretty good and we stop often ,and get to see loads of great places, going up tracks and little roads to find villages that don't get so many tourists, and the people are more inclined to chat.

Towed the caravan with the van to the south of France twice last year. A little over 5,000 miles and went over our insurance mileage

No mileage is too much if you have the diesel, the money, and your youth.

I know the feeling - my premium has doubled due to the change in our mileage limit.

Will know better next year when it comes to renewal time.

Each to their own, for me 250 -- 300 miles in day is more than enough for me then I would want a few days stationary ,but I have all the time in the world so no hurry.

I've done 1000 miles in a day before now whilst working, and regularly do 500

We have had many motorcycle trips to europe and the longest distance was a 320 mile leg in one day, with wives as pillions. Not a long distance, but plenty enough for the ladies/pillions.
My longest trip was Cyprus to Sheffield, when I left the forces and drove my double cab pickup through Europe, during the Greek farmers strike which added many miles to our leisurely 7 day journey. Definitely the way to travel....at a leisurely pace!!!

We have clocked up 19,000 miles on holiday in the last 3 years.

Been to France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg.

This summer - and every summer. But not in one big lump.....

200-300 miles each weekend between April and October - depending on shifts. In a beat up, raggedy, home-brew conversion VW T25 soon adds up to 6000 miles of fun :) :)

Me & the Wife done 12800 miles on our last trip, the only real limit is how far do you want to go...

Dave.

We did about 2000 last summer over 2 weeks in France with about 5 days stationary at Cap D'Adge on the Med. Absolutely amazing. One of the best trips we have done!

GO for it!
