How many miles is too many miles...

For the 3rd year running, we'll be doing 3000 miles in a month starting on Friday. Last year made it to Antibes from Lancs in 2 days - it wasn't planned that way, but the poor weather on the way down just spurred us on. This year - depending on the weather again- Plan 'A' is Lacanau (nr Bordeaux), then the Cote D'Azur, followed by N Italy and Bavaria, then home. I don't think that's too many miles, but it's down to personal prefence I suppose, but there will be 10 or so days on the Cote where we'll hardly be driving at all.

If the weather spoils that plan, we now have B, C and D contingency plans (D being 'sod it, just follow the sun').;)

We've just had a trip to Slovenia and Croatia and did 3600 miles, but we had five weeks. 400 miles a day is a doddle if you use motorways and I've done more occasionally. If I'm going to somewhere like Slovenia I do not want to waste time driving on slow roads through Belgium or Germany, countries that I've visited many times, I want to get to my destination and spend as much time there as possible, so I always use motorways and if they're toll roads, so be it.

If you set off at 0900 and average 50 mph on motorways, eight hours driving is 400 miles. We stop three times, half an hour for coffee after about a third of the journey, an hour for lunch after half the journey and afternoon-coffee after maybe three quarters.

Eight hours driving and two hours rest and lunch-stops means that by 1900 you've done 400 miles. Of course when in Slovenia or wherever, it all changes and we drive much shorter distances and take country roads to admire the scenery and see the life.

We did about 2000 last summer over 2 weeks in France with about 5 days stationary at Cap D'Adge on the Med. Absolutely amazing. One of the best trips we have done!

GO for it!

Hi Bluebell

Your map looks very similar to ours. We had planned to take in Du Mont Saint Michel in the North, followed by Carnac, St Jean Du Mont and Bordeaux, and catch the Loire Valley on our return from Annecy.. But we binned than Idea and decided on the Riveria after looking at the weather forecast.

Will look into Cap D'Adge - thanks for the tip off..

(Fuel costs and hours in Camper are rough estimates which will no doubt be exceeded).

Let's face it, too many miles is when you start to get anxious & snappy with your partner, or tired & innattentive. You really do need to be finding somewhere for a break, a bite to eat &/or a snooze before you hit that state.

When we had youngsters (back in the 80's) we only ever did 30-50 miles at a stretch before giving them a chance of a run around & some food. But once they were put to bed in the early evening we could easily knock off 150 miles to our next "prime area".

I suppose kids sleeping while on the road would be frowned on today, but no-one had seatbelts in the back of their vans in those days. You just had to make sure you drove safely & didn't give anyone the chance to bash into you! ;)
