On a campsite that I’ve paid for leave the cable and maybe a chair but if it’s just a park up or an open field type don’t think you should mark a spot you should treat it like you have left the place and take your luck when or if you return.
It says a lot about having an awning or a tent which can be utilised as such. Even so, we have had several times when someone has pitched too close & blocked our use or access to our existing plot, even on pre-allocated pitches. We have also used our garden solar lights as a perimeter markers, which are also useful during the dark hours, however there is a vast difference between a park & pitch site & a reserve pitch.
Most important: do not let it ruin your holiday, life's too short for bickering.
Not as easy with three dogs but a good idea. Planning & purchasing all one's provisions for the stay has usually eliminated our need to leave once pitched but I do know this is not always practicable.
