Help I`ve been bitten

It's rare tho, so I wouldn't stress about it as that will probably bring the ME back! Tucking trousers into socks in long undergrowth with deer around is probably sensible tho.

OMG !!!!!!
I have been looking on the nhs site about Lyme's disease. I love the Lake District, and go as often as poss, ( to hike ).

We are going to wales, in our new camper, again to hike. I have had ME for years, and have just began to feel better. Perhaps I had Lyme's, or will get it !

I am going to smother myself in insect repellent, wear tucked in clothing, but, I have long hair what about my head ? I think I need a swimming cap, or shower cap, lol.

Seriously, it worries me. Add to that .....hubby is going fishing, as he does often. He may bring some back with him !

Help.

Believe me the doctors will be quick to dismiss you if it is Lymes's desease. I am paranoid about what happened a few months ago and I wouldn't want it to happen again......

The dog got another tic over the weekend ....nasty little creature it soon got squelched despite my Buddhist faith blah blah :) !!!

ps this might be worth a try :)

Well the swelling hasn't got any worse, in fact gone down a bit if anything so it seems like I've got away with this one. Just started on the cider so if I do start going dizzy and seeing blurred it will be difficult to tell what's causing it :)

I still think it was a Horsefly as I`ve seen a few more since. I didn't know they existed before today.

I do wear long trousers after dusk but its 28oC in here so not ideal to wear then by day and besides I usually get eaten on a night.

I will also look out for the ticks. I have a tick removal tool that was bought for the dog so if the worse happens I can remove them head and all. We are staying on a working farm at the moment, I knew we should have gone to Pontins! Seriously though thanks again for all the advice.

Tropical Strength Deet from Boots. Son in law who works for drugs company says what it does is stops their mouth parts working so they cannot bite you. While they are trying to work out WHY their mouths aren't working you can flatten them :ninja:

You can get Antihistamine tablets from the chemist which will help with the itching. You can also try one of those electronic sting zappers as well.

Thanks Smaug, I looked into it some more, and found that not all tics carry the disease, phew. I really was worried. All the same, deet, deet and more deet, with tucked in trousers or gaitors.

There are a billion bugs out there waiting to bite you but most do little damage. If you start to get flu like symptoms go straight to your nearest A&E. If you get lots of swelling, an abscess or unusual marking on the skin then get it checked out. If in doubt - Check it out.

Bites

I recently met a lady on a wildcamping trip that swears by Avon skin-so-soft as an insect repellant. She is from up north and says that it is sold in many shops, especially in Scotland, as a repellant , us a lot by hikers....she said to rub a bit on your 'hot spots' ..wrists, behind knees, near ankles, shoulders and temples. Anyone ever used it ?

Good morning,

Still here and itchy leg but no worse than yesterday. Luckily we had some insect bite relief spray in the van that takes the itch off a bit.

The post above is right about there been loads of bugs. I read that for every single human there are 180 million insects.

Isn't motorhoming great. As well as the horsefly this site also has a Cockerel that kindly wakes you up early in the morning. :sleep-040:

Aye, it works a treat!

I also use it as a Midge Trap... I open the toilet room window (the "door" is just a curtain on my van and so always "open") and switch on the toilet room light (or indeed any other light) having previously sprayed the light fitting lens with Avon Skin-so-Soft. The beasties are attracted to the light (and the infra red they it gives off) land on the light and get stuck in the oil. It's great waking up in the morning and seeing 1,000s of the pesky blighters stuck to the light, and kind of "Ha, sting me would yah? Take that!" feeling... ;-)
A simple wipe with a towel etc and a respray and you're all set for the next influx of these 24hour lifespan menaces.

Glad you are ok, but, ****, it's the "Countryside" & that's how it works, cows bellowing for calves or in pain waiting for milking, sheep & lambs bleating, donkeys braying, cocks crowing, foxes screaming, rabbits squealing, huge tractor loads of hay up & down the lanes (it will be combines running thro the night soon). Get used to it, the countryside is not a place of peace & quiet by any means, but you do get less drunken yobs shouting, dogs barking, cats yowling & sirens wailing, it's a pleasant change innit?
:lol-049:

BTW I have heard that Avon have changed to formulation of the "so soft" and it is no longer anything like as effective against midges, but I have no experience of it then or now.

It still works just fine.

Sounds more like it. I wondered why a manufacturer would change a formula of a product and risk cutting sales.

I'm glad about that. My missus bought a dozen bottles of the stuff!

I've still got a couple of bottles of Skin-so-Soft and 1 of smidge, didn't need it on the last 3 trips over the border as one trip was in March and 2 were in October.

Must admit I usually travel to Scotland either early or late in the year.
