We arrive at Rotterdam on the 1 June then down through Luxembourg to Trier (Filling our diesel in Wasserbillig-Lux) no other plan other than slowly making our way to Cochem and emptying the Germans fridges of their lovely beer !

Enjoy the weissbeir and it will be spargel season so enjoy that as well. You will find Germany a wonderful place and very motorhome friendly

Our rough itinerary is; arrive Amsterdam 1st July, a quick hop across to Rudeshiem for a long weekend. Over to Wurzburg then along the Romantic road to lake Constance. A mooch around the Black forest, before heading back across France. Home at the end of July.
But then again, everything is still up for grabs apart from the first weekend.:lol-053:

i've been told you have to buy somekind of emmisions sticker for germany, any ideas what this is,thanks.

Its only if you intend to enter any of the main towns/cities.

Google umwelt stickers to get the latest locations.

Ooh. Also, if you're in the area, google the alpine road. We drove a chunk of it a few weeks ago and its got beautiful views.

We are off on 31st May & back on the 12th July using the tunnel, meeting up with daughter, son in law & grandkids for a bit in Belgium in the second week of June, then we have 3 to 4 weeks with no plans at the moment. Considering maybe heading through Luxembourg then a slow drive back up the Mosel. Must be about 5 years since we visited Germany. Need some info about the 'umwelt stickers' seem to recall that you can get them from some garages does anybody have any clear information. Not planning on doing too much driving just want a few nice places to relax.

I'll be visiting Germany shortly and travel extensively there. Did not even know about their exclusin zones until reading this thread, googled UMWELT STICKER and found this site very helpful, as all the current German towns which have an E.Z. are listed:-
Umweltplakette/Feinstaubplakette - Informationen und Bestellmglichkeit
In the FAQs I found the advice to go to a dealer/garage of the vehicle make I drive (Ford in my case) as soon as I get to Germany - they will be able to sell me the right sticker for my van. I'll be looking out for WCC vans whilst over there! Gute Fahrt!

Many bigger german towns are requesting a LEZ sticker and in nearly all of them it must be a green one. My car will get only a yellow sticker, it´s 10 years old.
I think that i do not need a sticker in my "homeland", neither red, yellow or green. The sticker is only applicable for the inner center of the respective town, in many cases the old town district. In case i want to visit those areas, i will park the van outside the green zone and take the bus or the bicycle. And the parking situation outside the centers often will be much better than in the inner center. It's just a matter of planning.
Generally all highways, motorways and 99% of all roads are sticker-free, so what. And in case i might drive into a sticker area by chance, i will turn the car and go back, nobody will chase you....the neighbouring town might be looking the same, may be they will not request a sticker there and so i know where to spend my money :).
And nearly all "Stellplätze" are outside the green zones, so no stress.
Since years i am driving without sticker and it never was a problem, as i said, i little bit of planning.
The only sticker i have on the car is the wildcamper sticker:):):)
So i think "no LEZ sticker" is not a show stopper.

With a 24 year old diesel there was no chance of a sticker... We didn't have a problem finding car parking on the outskirts of the various zones and walking in. I was happy with that, I don't particularly like driving in busy places anyway.

I did have a problem with my TomTom trying to get me to drive through the zones to get to the car parks though!

We visited Germany recently, it is beautiful. The Alpenstrasse is well worth a drive but be careful if approaching it from the Bodensee (Lake Constanz) for your directions, there are two towns called Immenstaad and Immenstadt, easy to get mixed up and end up in the wrong direction - we made that mistake! Also if you are doing the Alpenstrasse, we found the Stellplatz at Garmisch Partenkirchen a massive rip off - really expensive.

On someone else's recommendation on this site, we downloaded maps.me which is a fantastic offline mapping resource.

Have fun!

What confuses me over this is that you get a sticker of red yellow or green but what does this actually mean,, Green it is ok to enter? yellow OK as well as long as you push it and Red to be instantly crushed along with the occupants, if you do get lost what is the fine? is it like LEZ with a £1000 and no appeal, because ignorance of the Law is no excuse, or is it discretionary by who ever the authority that stop you ie Police, VOSA equivalent or a traffic warden. My van is Euro 3 and what is that in the big picture, probably a RED like it was at London.

Click on the link above to access the on line application for Umweltzone Plakette from Berlin Gov. price has now gone up to €6 but this lasts for the life of your vehicle and is not transferable, the penalty for getting caught in a low emission zone without one is €40 (and 1 penalty point on your licence if you'r a German citizen,) there was a rumour that the German Gov. where considering doubling the fine for foreign tourists because they can't enforce the penalty point on a visitors licence, but, I don't think this has been done as yet. You can buy a Plakette from other outlets once in Germany (TUV DEKRA the German equivalent of MOT stations) and most vehicle main dealers but expect to pay considerably more than €6 for it.

Phil

A lot has been written about the "Umweltzone" (=LEZ). By now nearly all zones require a green sticker - but in some of these areas you are allowed to go to the "Stellplatz" (aires) without a sticker (e.g.: Bremen, Oberhausen...). So it might be useful to use the internet before you avoid this or that city - the German equivalent to the British "MMM" is "Promobil" - they have Apps as well where you might find the information you need. - But it´s really a pain in ... with these zones - and real nonsense if you consider that e.g. ships cause MUCH more emission (that´s the reason why e.g. Hamburg doesn´t have a LEZ!)...

Try and plan an overnight stop at Esch Sur Sure one of the most attractive towns in Luxembourg. See link attached. There is plenty of wildcamping spots in the town by the river. A truly beautiful place to stop on your way to Germany. Esch-sur-Sûre Castle - Visit Luxembourg

coincidence

Esch-sur-Sure is exactly the place I plumped for during my research yesterday.
Any clue as to which bits of the river are good places to wild?

Also would like to stay near the loop on the Saar near Mettlach. Anyone been to the aire at Orscholz?

When you cross the bridge over the river, turn right into one way system and there is a continuous lay-by parking on the right side of the road adjacent the river. We stayed 2 nights here with no problem and it's only a few yards walk into the town, although I seem to recall it was a fair climb up to the castle, but worth it for the views. There are some excellent cafes and bars in the town. I could have stayed a week in this area.

Maybe we'll see a few of you on our travels - setting off on Sunday via Eurotunnel, up to Bruges (to see all the canals and that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoE9edjEDCI - one of my favourite films :) )

Then across to the Mosel, head south, then east again, prob Heidelberg, Rothenburg o.d. T, south down to Austria - not necessarily wilding all the time. You may recognise us - we'll be the bbqing, imbibing, daft-whippet owning people in a silver Hymer  - we won't be offended if you sneak past, but if you don't, we'll happily share a beer with you
