Gaslow system filling very slowly

Most appliance manuals have a rating for the gas they use, so maybe find that so you can estimate how much you have used then just use the van for a while to burn off some gas, then try a refill somewhere else.

n any event don’t try to put any more in until reason is found. If overfilled and you get somewhere warmer it may well start discharging through pressure relief valve on cylinder

The Gaslow tanks have gauges on top so it should be easy to check if full.

Well mine do anyway.

My Gaslow had a clip on plastic gauge that was useless. Broke off after a couple of years

Must admit I don’t turn off the bottles when filling. And on the occasions when queuing behind other vans at lpg pumps never seem them open their lockers either. But they may already be turned off before entering the forecourt but how likely is this?

Very likely. I have a crash sensor but I always turn my gas off whilst travelling, therefore I don't open my locker. A lot of people do the same.

I normally check the tank levels with the gauges at some point before filling to monitor gas consumption. More so when using heating when consumption dives. If using fridge on gas and cooking it seems to last forever. It gives me some idea how many litres will be required to fill the tanks at around 1.9ltr per kg of gas used. So when the pump suddenly slows down I know the tanks are full and it’s not a sudden filling failure.

I log all my journeys in a spreadsheet and this calculates my gas usage so I know when I need to fill. It also predicts future use so I know in advance.
My second bottle is Calor (handy if no LPG pumps available) but the last time I used it was about 5 years ago when a Spanish station ran out over a bank holiday weekend.

When filling with LPG I always fill to the cut off.

One of my bottles over-filled once but wierdly the other one didn`t even though they are connected and gas started escaping very very slowly from the PRV ( pressure release valve ).

The open / shut valve was also very stiff / gritty so i contacted Gas It straight away and they said it had over-filled and the liquid was touching the valve and freezing it hence the stiff / gritty feel to it.

They told me to remove the bottles and weigh them, this confirmed it by the offending one being heavier then the other so they told me to take it to the bottom of the garden to release some of the gas until it weighed the same as the other.

As soon as the weight reduced it stopped releasing gas from the PRV and it has been fine ever since.

Gas It said there was no need to do anything else as the PRV would reset itself.

As far as bottle levels are concerned ...

I've been very happy with the Mopeka level system I fitted ...

Connects to an app on my phone/tablet and has settable level warnings so I can swap bottles before one expires in the middle of the night .

When I need to fill, I normally shut off the gas before I get to the forecourt in order to avoid forecourt personnel thinking that I'm up to something nefarious.

I don't see the point but how would they know anyway, until you lift the pump nozzle and it triggers an alarm they will be on TikTok.

It could be a problem with the nozzle. We’re not on mains gas at home so I have a couple of Safefill bottles for the kitchen hob. Normally get them refilled at a local gas centre but on a couple of occasions have taken one to Morrisons ( who are happy to let you refill on the forecourt). On the first visit, I connected up and it took nearly ten minutes to fill. On the second occasion the same thing happened, but whilst still pressing the fill button I fiddled with the nozzle to check it was connected OK on the bottle - at which point the fill rate went back to normal. As soon as I let go it went down again. I found that if I pressed the nozzle down at a certain angle the fill went normally. Never had this problem at the gas centre (or with the Gaslow in my van) so I reckon there’s a particular problem with the nozzles at Morrisons (Bristol, Cribbs Causeway).
