Fridge winter covers

Mine is low mounted, with, as you say, the vents just at the top and bottom the fridge. Nowhere else for them to go really. It's convenient in case of a problem, I reckon you could just about access the burner, igniter etc. if agile. But agreed, it's the bare minimum.

Globecar fitted what look like quite large vents. The winter ones cost about £35 each, and I couldn't find them in the correct colour (dark grey) hence my DIY experiments. But I think my biggest problem is that the sliding door covers them when it's open, as it usually is during the day, when camped and living outside, only a small gap. Really hot weather, sometimes the sun beating down on that side of the van, not ideal. Just a little forced convection from my fans, tiny current drain, resolved that.

My Dometic instructions say to use the vent covers ( both top and bottom ) when the ambient temperature falls below 8 celsius.

I do this and find the fridge / freezer works well in all temperatures. Without the covers it struggled a bit in cold weather.

Our new Carthago which is specifically suitable for ski use comes from the factory with two covers. As a big skier I have always fitted two on our previous vans.

If you have standard vents then Dometic sell the covers in matched pairs - the lower one leaves a slit at the bottom and the upper a vertical opening over the chimney.
So the answer to the original question is simply - both.

As usual lots of varying experience.
I have a fridge freezer and the lower grille is roughly twice the normal size so i had to buy 2 sets!
For me they don't degrade performance - I don't know whether they improve it because once fitted for the winter I leave them on!

I too had a draught over the top of the unit so I took it back to the dealer and they 'fixed' it - that is say it was no better when I got it back!
To be fair it is awkward to get at as I found when doing it for myself!

I have found that the TOP cover SHOULD NOT BE USED.
The warm air can not escape so the fridge does not cool.
When I took the TOP cover off all worked perfectly.
Outside temperate was -8 to -14°C.
