Sorry Frank, the ice axe comment was meant in jest, hence the ....


although not really any more offensive than some of the other suggestions!

Harking back to the ice axe comment...I carried one of these for years in winter as it's helluva useful if you need to chip ice off the road to get a grip on a hill...saved me bacon a few times. Damn good for cracking nuts (the edible kind) too.

Can you explain the 12lbft to me, sounds like something to set my torque wrench to

It is in fact very similar, just a measure of the force of the pellet on leaving the gun, literally pounds per square foot. The other measurement is velocity (feet per second). Usually smaller bore weapons will have higher FPS and lower lbft, and vice versa.

We have a hiking type walking stick that can be extended we leave hanging by the bed. We also always put the alarm on & usually we put a strap across the doors. On the renault master I have to just hook it over the plastic door pockets (not the strongest of places but low enough that it would be difficult to reach if the window was broken). We also leave the alarm fob in a convienent place so the alarm can be activated by holding the button on. I was thinking about making my own type of 'deadlock' for the caravan door, mine is the type with 2 pins top & bottom that engage in a plate. I think I have figured a way of making a device to prevent the door being opened but can be taken off quite quickly in an emergency.

Hope I don't sound paranoid, we were robbed in Valencia, Spain in daylight so it does make you a bit more aware that it can happen to you. We regulary wildcamp when we are abroad but if we don't feel safe we are prepared to move to somewhere else. We try to make sure we can't easily be blocked in by a single car. In Spain avoid motorway services or lorry parks to sleep over.

It's a few years back but I came down the stairs one night when I heard noise to find a scumbag with his arm in my letterbox up to the shoulder with a piece of wire trying to fish my keys from the key rack inside the door...

I should have grabbed his arm and tied him to the bannister and "played" with him for the night..

Instead I got over zealous and got myself a record!!
