Dvla body type

I've applied to dvla to change the log book to a motohome...had a letter back today say even thou inside ticks all there boxes for a motohome conversion...outside they reakon it still identifies as a bus ..so they want to change the class to a HGV😪..any ideas what I can do guys?

Pretty standard response on a refusal.


Personally, I would say actually it does still look like a bus :( Maybe blank off some of the windows and paint them the same colour as the lower part? I'd have a look at images of some factory A-class coaches and take some cues of them for external appearance.

Let them know it would be illegal to class it as a HGV as it's not been type approved. Ask for Class M1 with a weight exemption.

When I put my registration number into the Manchester CAZ it says I'm a coach. So the information that counts is it's taxation class.

BTW, if you don't mind me asking. Are you still taxed as a bus/coach?

In fairness to the DVLA, But in general I don't think they are fair, it does to my mind still resemble a holiday coach, it must be very difficult to make a coach look like a motorhome as here in the UK "RV " is still an Americanism and not really recognised by the general British public. Phil

P.S. Nice looking conversion but really impractical in the UK 🤔

Is private hgv Road tax £165 cheaper than bus/coach ? As Wildebus says this seems to be an automatic dvla response to conversion requests with no appeal. 😒
 
Body type will not have effect on taxation class, it will be PHGV tax £165 . as prev post , it does look like a bus/coach . They want to move it to HGV as a tax class as you cant have private coach/bus tax , and it would not be possible to class 4 mot it , as far as I can work it out ? They have confirmed it complies as a motorcaravan so you quite safe with class 4 mot .
 
You will be right cold and condensation with all them single glasse windows, first thing I would have disposed of and sheeted in, does in my eye look like a bus.
 
I saw a service bus near Goldthorpe this morning converted to a Motorhome. Painted blue with one window whited over. Trouble is you’d need a hgv or PSV license to drive it.

I currently have a 5.5tonne Iveco welfare bus conversion, which the DVLA are happy for me to use as a motor caravan, it has a class 4 mot, & its taxed as a bus. The post office couldn't tax it as anything else while that logbook taxation class says Minibus. The entire system is £$%^, everyone interprets the rules differently & nobody, including the DVLA seems to have a clue what the actual rules are. I get different advice every time I ask anyone, its just a minefield!
Just do the conversion, present it to a HGV testing station, who will test it as class4, they have to test it as presented.
Tell your insurance company its a converted bus, they don't care any more & may ask you to try to get your logbook changed within 90 days, or they may not. Tax it as a bus its £165 a year, or PHGV,which is the same rate. Then fill it with diesel & get out on the road & enjoy.....👍🐻😉

Fancying a short single decker as my next project, but not sure what license I'd need. If it gets changed to motor caravan on the logbook, I reckon I'd need a HGV License, if it is refused, & stays a bus irrespective of conversion or tax class surely I'd need a PSV license?
Yet more confusion, why do we even bother?...🐻😒
 
I’ve been on bus/coach road fund tax for nearly 20 years now. They used to have a Motorhome or I think it was motorcaravan tax class.
