I have an 18 month old Volvo V60 diesel bought secondhand after weighing all the options, going on test drives and checking the actual economy versus petrol hybrids and including towing. There was no real choice except a diesel. Having done 20,000 miles I can still see bare metal inside the exhaust tailpipe, that's without Adblue so I feel quite vindicated in my choice. Roadtax is only £40 as well because CO2 emissions are so low.
If I lived/worked in a major city I might have bought differently if keeping the car for more than 4 or 5 years because of future emissions zones.
