Delays at Dover

Foolishly we tried to save money (for the pupils) on an Adventure Week to Normandy, many years ago. Instead of taking a UK coach all the way and have it sitting around doing nothing (or making the return and back-out trips empty) we booked a UK coach to Portsmouth and a French coach down the Cotentin peninsula. The transfer at Portsmouth was reasonable, although pouring rain didn't make it particularly pleasant. Returning via Cherborg, we dropped off the kids' suitcases in a holding area and enjoyed a couple of hours in the town. Back at the port we dished cases out to anyone in the group, to be sorted once we were back at school: not good enough said the French authorities. Every child had to be in possession of their own bags so 50 people milled around trying to resort luggage.

Going to USA, we had to stress to pupils (who were spread out in the aeroplane because we weren't allowed to pre-book seats) not to tick the box which said "have you ever been a spy" etc on their green entry form because the border guards wouldn't see it as humorous. Then crossed our fingers that a group of teenagers actually did what they were told! I wonder if ETIAS will have similar questions?

ETIAS is definitely a PITA but isn't it just the way they administer their border control. How does it differ from the one we introduced?

Thats shocking. I Cant seem to find any reference to it though (not read the book). It should have been easily negotiated because we do indeed offer six months free movement to Europeans here in the UK. It would have solved a lot of long term travel issues for us motorhomers for sure.
M. Barnier's Diary just has a September 2016 start date for the reciprocal treatment offer to a January 2017 conclusion that the offer has been rejected, and the topic then disappears from the Diary Pages

Thanks. There was this but it was mainly focused on Musicians and other key workers. Its clear though that a 180 day agreement could have easily been made, probably for all. Certainly students and long term travellers but the UK government simply weren't interested. Free movement was a dirty word. Not so much now of course we are now desperate for labour.

I managed to find this article from October 2017, which fits the timeframe I mentioned; the final paragraph makes reference to Citizens Rights being an outstanding issue that needed to be ringfenced from other negotiations

One of the truisms of life is that unless those with their hands on the levers of power refuse to acknowledge cause and affect when confronted with a mess, we are going to see it repeated again and again.

No doubt we shall muddle through in the short term, probably by rationing the number of coaches at busy times.

Wonder if it will be the same in 20 years time? Probably too late for me but I would really hope that the young will have easy access to Europe just like I and my children enjoyed.

Speaking as someone who regularly travelled to Europe through Passport control (with a variety of different European banknotes in my wallet), these delays have always been there at certain times of the year. It's nothing new. But nowadays it is convenient to blame it all on something that came about recently (B). Especially among those who have recently become very politically orientated. Of course forums were not so popular back then and people had not turned into whingeing morons, they accepted that these things happened when travelling and accepted more.

Phil has done exactly the correct thing by restricting political discussions on here as all it does is cause arguments. I no longer post on 2 motorhome forums where political discussions have wrecked the sites. There are a number of wildcamping members who appear to have done the same and appear on here. On one of them the Admin himself was the biggest culprit who actively encouraged dissent just so he could trumpet his own political views. Hypocritically he now posts more on here than on his own forum and stays well away from being destructive because he knows he will be banned.

There have been over 30 posts now, so I hope Phil sees my post and deems it political and closes the thread.

Some friends have just sailed from Dover, no delays this morning.

The major delays seem to be restricted to the coaches, Jo, as Simon Caulder said yesterday. Cars and lorries are shuffling along in the normal loading process, but coaches are being delayed twice, firstly to enter the holding area at the Cruise Terminal; and secondly, in the Passport Checking Border Control queue, where it takes 75-90 seconds per passenger x 60 per coach, so around 75mins to 90 mins per coach. And Port of Dover were not expecting the number of coaches that the Ferry Companies had booked, so a melange of chaos!

Perhaps Port of Dover and the Ferry Companies could talk to each other re the volume of coaches expected each day, in advance of Easter and other peak periods ...

I only use this forum, but that sounds interesting. Any chance of a clue?
I like people who upset themselves.

But nobody’s arguing or being nasty to each other, Jim, so I don’t see why you are getting upset 🤷‍♀️🤔

If you’ve got issues with a particular forum member why don’t you just block them so they won’t irritate you?

Not worth getting get yor knickers in a twist aboot nowt, pet, at our age it can be bad for your health 😘😉😂

Knickers in a twist? I got mine in a knot on 26th January with a well known insurance company, resulting in my having a mini stroke, which proves your point (y). First Outpatient Hospital appointment 6th April, next on 20th April and other appointments being made by the Hospital as my File reaches the next medic in the process . On the bright side, I'm ahead of the game on the return from my NI contributions over the years ... :D
