I like a black tea when I first wake up then second drink of the day is an Americano made in one of those capsule/pod machines. Usually only have one cup a day so its overkill to take the 240v machine that would fill one locker plus an inverter.

I have been looking around for a small size 12v machine that doesn't need a degree to use and doesn't cost a fortune but not found anything yet. Has anyone found anything or do you just use a cafetière?

We use an Italian Coffee maker, they are brilliant!
One like in kink below.

VonShef Italian Espresso Moka Coffee Maker Percolator Stove Top Pot 9 cup 5060351492331 | eBay

Only cheap to buy, simple to use Aslong as you a heat source like a gas hob. Some water and we use Lidl ground coffee.
Does say 9 cup but that because it's mainly for expresso but our 9 cup makes 2 tall coffee glasses.
Lovely jubbly

We do have, or had, one like that but not seen it for a few years now. Problem I am finding is because I haven't used ground coffee outside of capsules for ages I haven't found one to match the Costa Americana yet.

Must admit the one you linked did make a brilliant brew, I was asking Caz where it had gone last time we were out so maybe have to get another if I cant find anything to take pods. Have seen some single use contraptions for Nespresso pods but were around 100 quid and I aren't spending that for one cup a day :)

I use an Aeropress with Sainsbury’s loose coffee great for the van I also use Lyons Coffee bags just like a teabag great for a quick cup.

Yup, that's the baby.

I use a cafetiere we've had for donkey's years, but the stove top ones are brilliant - and still cheap to buy.

Reminds me of my very first greek/turkish coffee in Cyprus back when I was 21 except they used a simple, small metal stove top pan with spout, no lid and no percolator thingy on top. I remember bringing one back but it went missing years ago.

Personally, and wherever possible, I like to use stuff that doesn't rely on an electrical source in the van, be it 240 or 12 volt makes no difference.

Getting your coffee/tea just right the old-fashioned way takes a bit of trial & error & practice, BUT if you don't have time to practice your barista skills when out in your van, when will you?! It's not like you'll be rushing round trying to get to work on time! ;) :D

Please don't take this the wrong way, but the results are just as good as yon fancy coffee/tea making machines that cost a small fortune.
Also - might be wrong as never owned or used one - I'm guessing those pod/capsule thingies you use with them are pricier than straightforward coffee beans/ ground coffee? Plus they are a use-once-chuck-away type thingy which makes me cringe (sorry!) :)

In my opinion (which counts for nowt!) yon fancy coffee makers are a perfect example of our daft consumerist world :D

Enjoy anyway! ;)

I am not a coffee snob Marie and would never spend the sort of money some of these things go for, got my Bosch Tassimo thing in an Amazon sale for under £50, as Americans doesn't need a whitener capsule I get 18 cups out of a pack and I always go for cheaper multi pack offers or pound shop when they have them. Last 2 boxes I think were Lidl or Aldi (still Costa branded) and were under £3 and its a seriously good brew to my taste.

I always used to use a cafetière and we have one in mh now we are using just not found the same taste for the morning hit even using the Costa ground.

If anyone knows a ground or whole beans that makes a mug tasting like the Costa Americano or something like Cap Columbi (is that how its spelt, the Nescafe powder one?) for a stove top or cafetière then that will do me instead. Its the flavour I am after more than the machine but not found it yet

I had forgotten all about those coffee tea bag things, remember having them back in 80's or 90's. Will have to have a look what they do, that may solve it for me :)

My sister is ace at making delish coffee from plain ground coffee or beans to grind.

She's used a cafetiere for years and just seems to have it off to a fine art. Think she uses a variety of different brands depending if they're on offer or not when she's out shopping.

I don't have it off to a fine art, but I still like to practice when away in the van!

I hear what you're saying about the taste. For example, I can't really drink normal Nescafe instant coffee any more, just don't like the taste, and if you're going to drink coffee you might as well go for the one with the best taste for you.

And to think we used to be a nation of tea drinkers! :lol-049::rolleyes2:

I blame the Italians (sorry Onion!) :p :D

PS. My sister won't use anything below strength 4 if that helps!

I'm being devil's advocate here, but I wonder how many cups of proper coffee using a cafetiere/stovetop would make for £50?

Oh, I do love winding people up! heh heh :rolleyes2::lol-049:

Please don't take the bait, Nabs, I'm just in a mischievous mood this morning - you go spend your dosh on whatever you want or like and you DO NOT/NEVER need to justify yourself to me or any other cheeky wind up merchant!! ;) :D

Small tassimo in the van and at home morning cafe or americano and an inverter get the pods on offer about 18 to 21 pence per cup but goooood taste love a bargain so no need to compromise at this cost and no cafatier to clean

Morning MSG & Hi gang,

As most will know, I’m currently in training for this liveaboard life and am approaching the end of my Level 2 element, which obviously means more responsibility so today I have 2 tasks to complete, one of which I’m told will involve HiViz & wellies... and the other is making his coffee, eeek!

NZ IS a coffee snob and is EXTREMELY particular about how it’s made....
along the same lines as your sister does, we buy good coffee only when it’s on offer (usually 2 for £6) we also never buy under a strength 4, normally we get 4’s, 5’s & 6’s and then mix them, so 2 full packets ‘blended’ will normally last us just over 14 days..... and Yes, NZ has done the maths....
2packets = £6, once blended (these last 15 days ish) = 60 mugs divided by £6 = 10p per mug.

so 2 like this, blended

0FE17344-5DA3-4F59-AA6F-BB899A3D7418.jpg

makes enough to last 2 weeks, at 3 heaped spoonfuls (and Yes it’s a l-o-n-g spoon, NZ is so ana....fussy!!) per cafetière.

end result...

NZ often has his morning coffee whilst doing important research into the female psyche, this often takes longer than the cafetière lasts and I stand by with the tweezers to take the splinters out of his fingers while he processes, with the occasional smirk as he winces when the points pinch a little (for emphasis of course!)

and honestly, it’s really easy to do, sounds a faff but it’s not and it does make really yummy coffee, when we offer visitors tea, the majority will say ‘no coffee on the go...?’

They are great for that quick cup for my other half and guests to the van I personally don't like the taste of the coffee I am a Sainsburys own brand No4 or I love Rombouts

Buy a small plastic funnel, a packet of number 4 filter papers, boil the kettle, drop the filter in, one spoonful of coffee, pour over hot water for the size of cup and use the same filter for the bread knife. 5 mins later filter is cool and grinds solid, lift it out and throw into the bin, job done and no mess and perfectly good coffee, we use taylors number 4 or american breakfast first thing. To date we havent found and electric that beats good old filter coffee but if you want one with frothy milk, stick a whisk on your drill and blast the hot milk till it froths and job done. Always an answer of you ask, lol.

There is also the Eco bit as there are mountains of these coffee pods being discarded adding to the waste mountain and the ocean waste. Use loose or coffee bags 👍

Aldi 8 pack cappuccino with good slug of Ballycastle. ,just off to put kettle on :cool1::cool1::tongue::tongue::tongue::tongue:

We now buy these Lyons Coffee Bags 18 Pack 125G - Tesco Groceries

Lidl & Aldi do 'em too and more common abroad, France / Holland etc .... Various strengths and quality available. Ok, not a filter Espresso but better than dried nonsense.

Sick of the Cafetiere / Percolator mess of cleaning up when off grid & would never take a Tassimo etc. Way too much space waste.

Chrz Mul.

Answering the specific question (rather than suggesting alternative drinks) if the only reason you would get an inverter is for a 240V coffee machine, then probably a very pricey cup of coffee as you will need a fairly hefty inverter as I think these coffee machines are a high wattage?
So yup, overkill :)

I don't know much about those machines as on the occassions I drink coffee I actually PREFER Instant Granules over Filter!
