Clean air category and registration

Google maps doesn't warn of all emission zones, at least at the moment.

A quick search will show which they do show, they are listed.
Thanks for that. I've tried searching for that info but failed to find the list. All I got was an article from last year that said Google would implement this. I also used Google Maps to plan a route that would (in the absence of the CAZ) take me through Bath -- and Google failed to warn of that as well. Like Bradford, Bath doesn't have a viable bypass route to avoid the CAZ -- although Bradford is the more mendacious IMO as they've set the boundary to include the ring road.

The annoying aspect at least for the bradford one is that the ring road itself is part of the zone so anyone wanting to skirt around it will have to do it on side streets, this will be fun for articulated trucks etc, and as a lot of it is through asian areas the side streets will be blocked off so you cannot just wander around.

Another well thought out plan.

And it doesn't get rid o polution it just moves it up the road.

I finally dug out the V5 for the van and set about registering it, seems it wil only be for Bradford so not a lot of use unless I need to go to the dentist which is now in Shipley, was Bingley til they shut down and moved.

it says M1 no further evidence required, but of course mine doesn't say M1 and the form doesn't tell me what to do about that. so I sent pictures anyway and let them decide from there.

Newcastle/Gateshead are introducing their ULEZ charges from January 2023 I believe?

Doesn't apply to private vehicles (for now).

Unless you can easily afford all these extra charges, or are in a financial position to go ahead and upgrade your existing vehicle to something that is compliant, travelling freely around the country in older private vehicles will become much more restrictive for a fair proportion of the population.

That Newcastle one caused me to have a bit of a wobble on Tuesday night when driving home - saw the signs and had a real "oh shoot" moment as google was taking me right through it. Got home and first thing Weds. checked and I looked it up here: https://www.breathe-cleanair.com/

Where it says:

Charges for non-compliant taxis, buses, coaches and HGVs will begin on 30 January 2023.

Charges for vans and light goods vehicles will be delayed until July 2023 to allow additional time for owners to upgrade due to national vehicle supply issues.

So "phew"... That site also has a link to the gov.uk checker, so it might be worthwhile looking up your van:

https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones

where it looks like my van is fine which is nice to know as the possibility of me getting lost (again) in Newcastle is non-zero...
(That link covers other citys too; Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Gr. Manchester, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside)

The issue with many of these zones is that, while it seems at first sight that private vehicles are not affected, only private cars escape the charges and motorhomes are treated as commercial vehicles. Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned provided only major conurbations were affected and no motorways, other trunk roads (including ring roads and bypasses) and park-and-ride schemes were affected. However, as seen with both Bath and Bradford, that's not the case.

Its all a prelude to road pricing I reckon.
ISTM that it's all a prelude to confining the hoi polloi to "15 minute cities" -- aka ghettos -- as being trialled in Oxford.

Dear all,

We went through the clean air zone in Bradford last week. We didn't even notice on the way out as it was dark. We thought we would be ok as Bradford exempts Motor Caravans. Alas, our vehicle comes up on the system as chargeable as a "Van". We were advised that there is a missing data field on the V5 so I contacted the DVLA who were not much help other than suggesting the Euro 3 designation is missing from the V5. They suggested I contact the manufacturer (Hymer?) to see if they will supply a suitable letter on headed paper but I would love to know how other Hymer Coachbuilts are listed on their V5.

Ours is down as a 2006 Fiat (not as a Hymer C544) 3500 KG Gross ands Private/Light Goods (PLG) with body type listed as Motor Caravan. Vin starts ZFA.....

Hopefully I can claim back this stupid new tax as we were advised to pay and then submit a claim in for a refund.

Thanks!

Keith
Did you get your money back we were going to the Dobrudden campsite at Baildon on the 28Th December and have the same motorhome as you

Not as yet. You should be able to try to exempt it prior to travelling. That would be much safer!

Does anyone know how these areas work if you are on foreign plates ?
I don't know how it works, but the London LEZ/ULEZ works for vehicles from at least the EU and Europe. There was someone from Switzerland who posted here about getting a fine when returning home. The TFL LEZ/ULEZ payment page has a link for foreign registered vehicles. I've never looked to see what countries it does cover. (might look out of interest :) )

May well be if you have driven up from, say, Namibia you may well get away with it.

They can send someone to get a payment for a fine if they like, but when they get here I think a change of heart may transpire once things have been explained.

I didn’t know about Bradford and Leeds LEZs. Relieved to see on Green Zones App we’re still ok. Used to be free app covers zones throughout Europe. It seems we have Grandfathers rights for our van, but now they’ve started charging for additional vehicles… shame.

I believe another tax by the government and nothing to do with air quality when you can still drive through it.
