Clean air category and registration

Dear all,

We went through the clean air zone in Bradford last week. We didn't even notice on the way out as it was dark. We thought we would be ok as Bradford exempts Motor Caravans. Alas, our vehicle comes up on the system as chargeable as a "Van". We were advised that there is a missing data field on the V5 so I contacted the DVLA who were not much help other than suggesting the Euro 3 designation is missing from the V5. They suggested I contact the manufacturer (Hymer?) to see if they will supply a suitable letter on headed paper but I would love to know how other Hymer Coachbuilts are listed on their V5.

Ours is down as a 2006 Fiat (not as a Hymer C544) 3500 KG Gross ands Private/Light Goods (PLG) with body type listed as Motor Caravan. Vin starts ZFA.....

Hopefully I can claim back this stupid new tax as we were advised to pay and then submit a claim in for a refund.

I think most 'motor caravans' are shown as Fiat etc on V5c. I know ours have always been shown as base vehicle.

Our Hymer is listed the same as yours. So is Autosleeper Trooper we know of. Hope this gets sorted out. Thanks for heads up as we could easily stray into zone.
 
We too, were caught out in Bradford, a couple of weeks ago. I remembered reading about the Bradford LEZ, but had forgotten about it, because we rarely travel that way. Anyway, we had to pay the charge. I hadn't heard that motorcaravans should be exempt ! Can anyone tell me where this exemption has been documented ? I would be very interested.
 
Mine is down a Iris bus but reged as a motorcaravan & 6.400kg, true weight is 4.300kg, no such charges over here, wont happen as tractors etc go through many towns and villages.
 
When I put our van reg in it says we have to pay so I just avoid Bradford the catch is it also includes Shipley.

Hi. On the Gov website it says that motorhomes are exempt but only of you are a Bradford resident and only one vehicle per household.

I was told residents only are free all euro 5 and older must pay mobility vehicles are free ,we have a member in Bradford ,hopefully she will reply.
 
If you read that document then later on in the table it says motor caravans from both inside and outside districts are exempt. Its a bit confusing as earlier on it says Euro 5 needed but not on the table lower. The lady I spoke to confirmed we shouldn't have to pay BUT our vehicle comes up as a van which does need to pay.

Residents vehiclesBradford residents can apply for an exemption from CAZ charges for one private vehicle per applicant of any vehicle Class, in addition to any exemption for motor caravans and motorised horseboxes.
Please note: Private passenger vehicles will never be charged, you do not have to register your car for an exemption


I also looked to see if the same exemption would apply in other towns, but not found that yet.

Just happened to me .picked some campervan furniture and rock and roll bed for a van I'm converting from lusso .missed the signs too busy watching where I was going 2 weeks later a bill dropped through the letter box for £60 plus £9.50 the daily charge for entering a clean air zone .no wonder towns and city's are failing and we're spending more on Internet shopping
 
Dunno about there, but there are signs everywhere starting about 3 miles away so plenty of warning so people can pull over and google it.

AFAICT, there is problem in that Bradford say motor caravans are exempt but the Government page (https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones) appears not to recognise motor caravans even if that's the body type on the V5. Mine is 3,850kg MAM, PHGV taxation class with a body type of "Motor Caravan". A friend has an 02-plate Auto Sleepers Ravenna, also body type "Motor Caravan" but taxation class PLG. Neither are shown as exempt on the Government sites -- not even in Bradford.

FWIW, I was heading back from the Squinting Cat pub stop before the zone became live. While there were plenty of warnings, I couldn't find an easy way to bypass Bradford without entering the zone. AIUI, Bath has a similar issue -- you basically have to do a U-turn and create masses of additional pollution by driving a lot of extra miles.
